Education in prison

This is a column from George Will about a group of people in a maximum facility prison earning degrees. For whatever reason i'm not able to post the article so the link is attached.

Prison is obviously a place to be punished for wrongful acts. At the same time many in prison get out and must rejoin society and we have a high recidivism rate. We don't have the money to set up full on schools in prison but I do like the idea of being able to give these people some opportunity and hope so they don't rob me when they get out in the future.

I'd be fine with it if the government also gave law abiding citizens/tax payers the same opportunity for a free education. Seems like a slap in the face to tax payers that never had the resources to attend college and managed not to go out and commit crimes. And I don't agree that it's worth it to the community at large to give dubious persons the advantage of an education before giving the same to the community itself. You may have helped the criminal avoid recidivism, but at a cost to the disadvantaged in the community at large.
