Duke Energy guaranteeing $10 million line of credit for DNC

Duke Energy Corp., whose CEO is leading the fundraising for the Democratic National Convention, is guaranteeing a $10 million line of credit for the event.

The credit line from Fifth Third Bank is apparently the first time such an arrangement has been used by any Democratic convention organizers.

A Duke spokesman said stockholders, not rate-payers, would be on the line if the convention's host committee defaults. But the head of the committee said it may never have to draw on the money.

"It is just security in the event of a cash shortfall," Will Miller, acting executive director of the Charlotte organizing committee, said Friday. "The host committee is obligated to pay it back, and the host committee will pay it back."

Some suggest the arrangement is tantamount to a large corporate contribution at a time when the party is touting new rules that bar corporate cash and individual contributions over $100,000. Democrats have pledged "a people's convention" and say the line of credit doesn't violate the new rules.

Duke faces increasingly heavy costs from federal environmental rules, and will shutter some of its old coal-fired power plants rather than upgrade them. The utility also plans to build an $11 billion nuclear plant in South Carolina that has to be approved by state and federal regulators.

UNC Charlotte public policy expert David Swindell has said Rogers' involvement can only help Duke in seeking energy subsidies from the Obama administration. Others say the company could at least expect goodwill from the party that controls the White House.

"Duke may not be angling for a particular payback, but certainly they are currying favor with the Democratic Party," said Sheila Krumholz, executive director of Washington's Center for Responsive Politics.

So the People's Convention is bought & paid for by a big polluting energy corporation, the word hypocrisy comes to mind.

I know, right? You'd expect them to get this kind of funding from Ben & Jerry's or one of George Soros' many companies, not from Big Energy! Hell, don't the Libs have some windmill or solar panel company they could use? This is embarrassing for them.

get this straight you corporatist/globalist anti worker profiteer, the dems are right and any funding to get them ahead is OK.
don''t come whining to us if they get Afghanistan freedom fighter bonds next.

They also a company that is investing in Green Energy! Probably the reason they support Democrats.

i have no doubt you would say the opposite if this was a loan to the GOP...you're all over the GOP when it comes to relationships with corps...but now its the dems....must, must make ANY excuse

proof, please
Why should I provide proof to you, who can not debate?

You can go to their web site and find the % nukes yourself. You can also see that their KWH rates are some of the lowest in the nation.

When I lived in NY the utility was Niagara-Mohawk. Their rates kept rising every year, and their excuse was that they had nuclear power. My next door neighbor worked for them and he told me the real story. When I moved to NC I was pleasantly surprised that my electric rates decreased by about 50%. Duke's reasoning is that they have nuclear power.

In fact I saw a similar statement made the other day in the newspaper when they interviewed the company spokesman about the problems in Japan. Their response was on the order of: 'No, it doesn't affect our plans. Duke is planning to built another nuke in SC, so we can continue to provide some of the lowest electric rates in the nation'.

No they invest in green energy because the Democrats who used to control the NC Congress are forcing them to produce 10% of their total power with "green" energy. Duke just invested in a "solar farm" close to me that provides a tiny amount of power to the grid at a cost several time higher than nuclear. As an added benefit, it took several hundred acres of valuable farmland off the market forever.

Well, if the Dem fundraisers handle money like the Dem politicos, then they probably will default, and will wind up needing that protection. :D

Green is where the money is, I am sure they don't have to be forced to make money!

Green is where the money is, I am sure they don't have to be forced to make money!

Forced? What? That doesn't make sense. :palm:

All liberals should be forced to put their money where their mouths are and buy their energy there. The capital cost of the pant is $173 million, and it is expected to generate 115 million KWH of electricity over it's 20 year lifespan.http://www.the-dispatch.com/article/20100204/ARTICLES/100209942

I'll simplify the calculations for you by neglecting the time value of money as well as operating costs, both which are substantial, since you wouldn't understand that anyway. The resultant electricity cost $1.50 per KWH to produce, and the residential retail rate is less than 8 cents.

Therefore Duke is buying electricity at over 19 times what they sell it for. Add in the costs that I neglected, and that ratio nearly doubles.

The "farm" also takes 356 acres of valuable farmland out of production that would otherwise produce $3 to 4 million in food crops, not to mention converting tons of CO2 into oxygen.

All because the government has forced Duke to produce 12.5% (I was wrong yesterday when I said 10%) of its electricity from so-called "green" sources.

Why do you like expensive electricity? Why do you want poor people to have less food? Why do you want greenhouse gasses? :)

They are supporting them to get approval to build their nuclear plant.

of course it's different.......they like Democrats....it has to be good......right?......

I am sure they like Republicans, too! Most energy companies make sure they spread the love around! They play both sides of the fence up here and jump on whatever band wagon is serving their best interest at the time! Up here it is currently the Republicans, but the Democrats are quickly jumping on the natural gas line.

Don't we all support those who most reflect our ideals? And this is a loan, not a contribution, there is a difference. The DNC may not even need the loan, this is just in case their donors don't come through.

I don't like the idea, but how is it different from borrowing from a bank?

Congress passes laws and makes policies that influence bankers, too.
