New York police will use drones to monitor backyard Labor Day parties this weekend. Kaz Daughtry, the assistant NYPD Commissioner made the announcement during a security briefing on J’ouvert, an annual Caribbean festival.

“It’s a troubling announcement and it flies in the face of the POST Act,” said Daniel Schwarz, a privacy and technology strategist at the New York Civil Liberties Union, referring to a 2020 city law that requires the NYPD to disclose its surveillance tactics, according to AP. “Deploying drones in this way is a sci-fi inspired scenario.”

Those attending outdoor parties or barbecues in New York City this weekend may notice an uninvited guest looming over their festivities: a police surveillance drone.

The New York City police department plans to pilot the unmanned aircraft in response to complaints about large gatherings, including private events, over Labor Day weekend, officials announced Thursday.

“If a caller states there’s a large crowd, a large party in a backyard, we’re going to be utilizing our assets to go up and go check on the party,” Kaz Daughtry, the assistant NYPD Commissioner, said at a press conference.

I’m not sure what you are asking but surveillance without probable cause is a problem.

It appears that the police will be surveilling all large groups, even if they are in the backyard of a homeowner with no reports of problems.

If there are no reported problems, why should a private homeowner be surveilled in his/her own back yard?

If a problem is reported, yes, send up a drone first.

It’s a Fourth Amendment violation.

There are very specific drone laws about flying and observing over property you don’t own. Also about flying over people and roads. Just this year laws about flying over people and roads was relaxed a bit for drones under 250 grams.
Notice once again, laws are ignored by the “civilian” police force and government agencies.
Laws are for subjects of a tyranny not tyrants.

Also notice that the Constitution and Bill of Rights contains no rules and laws for controlling the people, just laws for limiting government. Does it operate that way today?
