Drill baby drill... Ill bet they retire that line...

The Republican oil-pollution gusher

By Brent Budowsky - 05/07/10 11:21 AM ET

I dont have much use for President Obama's bobbing and weaving on offshore oil, or his taking more than $70,000 of BP campaign money. But these Republican geysers are real pieces of work, aren't they? The Republicans are the party of oil, the party of pollution and, dare I say it, the party of global warming. The president sins out of weakness. The Republicans commit far greater sins as a matter of policy.

It was wrong for the Obama team to lower the standards for environmental impact statements for BP, and shame on Democrats who lack the courage to say this. But it is a hundred times more shameful that the same Republican policies of laissez faire that so harmed the nation on Wall Street and banking now work their magic to pollute our gulfs and poison our shores and do even more damage to our economy.

Drill, baby, drill? I hope every Republican runs on this campaign slogan again. Pollute, baby, pollute, is their program. It is true that the lobbyist-industrial complex that I have been criticizing has polluted both parties in Washington. It is also true that the Republican philosophy of laissez-faire now further pollutes our shores, further kills our wildlife, further poisons our air and further destroys our jobs.

On the matter of offshore drilling, the left was right and the right is deadly wrong.

So where are the CBC and liberal media — our supposed racial torchbearers in the dark — when a Democrat says something racist? Apparently, they’re all too willing to accept Reid’s apology, even though it comes one year after the fact. As CBC Chairwoman Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) said in a written statement this week: "There are too many issues like the economy, job creation and energy for these regrettable comments to distract us from the work that must be done on behalf of the American people." Writing for TheHill.com, commentator Brent Budowsky was even more succinct: “Yes, [Reid’s] words were wrong. Apology needed. Apology given. Apology accepted.”

Clearly, there is a double standard. When a Democrat makes a racially insensitive remark, the party, a collection of sympathetic commentators and the CBC easily accept his apology — no matter how belated — and move on. When Republicans do the same, they lose their jobs.

I think the future belongs to thorium based reactors which have many advantages over uranium, not least that thorium is much more abundant and is distributed all over the world. There are also less proliferation worries and the waste is minimal. Here's what Wikipedia says about India and thorium reactors.

The prototype is expected to be fully operational by 2011, following which five more reactors will be constructed.[24] Considered to be a global leader in thorium-based fuel, India's new thorium reactor is a fast-breeder reactor and uses a plutonium core rather than an accelerator to produce neutrons. As accelerator-based systems can operate at sub-criticality they could be developed too, but that would require more research.[25] India currently envisages meeting 30% of its electricity demand through thorium-based reactors by 2050.[26]

Here is where you are full of shit...!

Demanding that we not go into such an enviromentally risky business as offshore oil drilling with a casual attitude like "drill baby, Drill" is not the same as demanding we not drill at all.

There are ways to make offshore drilling much more safe, but you Conservatives and Republicans would scream all day about how obtrusive the "regulations" are and how we are making the cost and availability of oil skyrocket!

The second point is that this drilling SHOULD not by now be necessary. We have known of the dangers of this type of drilling for at least 40 years now and if we made it a priority we would have an alternative by now, hell we put a man on the moon in 10 years.

I wished Bush would have done it, and now I wish Obama would, declare the issue of clean energy independence a number one national priority, dedicate the resources to the cause and lets get er done! If we had spend what we spend in Iraq on this issue it would be solved, and the terrorists would be broke. 20 years ago we should have stoped funding the terrorists with huge gas guzzeling SUV's.

If we reduce demand, increase safety standards, and work on alternative fuels we will be in a great position in 10 years.

Oil consumption could be cut by 90% and our dependence on it done, that would make the world a better, cleaner, safer place.

sure Jarod, your a rich lawyer who lives close to his office. Yet you still drive a car have a large Plasma tv. Everybody wants to drive but nobody wants to help actually make it safer. Jarod your a hack of the highest order.

I dont have a Plasma TV... and I walked to work today.

Ending driving does not make it better. Driving less, voting for responsable regulation and investments of Tax dollars into alternatives makes it better!

:palm:Once again, Southy brings up racial issues to counter a point of fact that has NOTHING to do with racial issues.

Southy is your typical dishonest POS neocon hack.....even when a critique includes negative press about Obama and the Dem party, Southy cannot stand any factual criticism of the GOP and what disasters their policies have wrought. So he merely tries to change the subject in the most divisive manner.

Define "minimal" waste. I'm not trying to be snide here, I'm serious. Deadly radioactive waste really doesn't require large quantities to contaminate a good size of real estate or of the populace. Combine that with all the other problems that I've documented on this thread, and essentially we're looking at a very stubborn adherence to a particular brand of technology that gives a false sense of ecological/biological security to the citizenry while lining the pockets of the utility owners, investors and shareholders.

Actually, I was showing what a hack commentator Brent Budowsky was, and his double-standards with respect to Democrats and Republicans.

Actually, you couldn't disprove what was said on the topic of this thread, so you try to discredit the author....and you'll continue to repeat your attempt to divert attention from the accuracy of the original piece on the subject title of this thread.

Actually, my previous statement is dead on accurate.

Not that I couldn't, but didn't bother, since the man is a political hack, which is dead-on accurate.

We dont need to ban the oil companies... we need to muzzle them and put a choke colar on them. They need to pay to clean the mess they made while making record protits!

Odd analogy, but you missed out the part where you have to constantly trail after them picking up their shit.

No I said they need to be required to pay to clean up the mess they made while making record profits.
