Draft GOP Platform Calls to Undo Marriage Equality, Endorses Conversion Therapy
The Republican Party's official platform left its only gay committee member in tears

The Republican party is set to take a lurch even further to the right if delegates decide to ratify the draft party platform for the year, which boasts controversial positions on same-sex marriage, conversion therapy, and even porn.
Party officials are currently working through the platform, but have already approved a number of controversial measures. One of the worst of those is on marriage equality, where the party has called for a constitutional amendment to define marriage as between one man and one woman.
“Our laws and our government’s regulations should recognize marriage as the union of one man and one woman and actively promote married family life as the basis of a stable and prosperous society,” the draft platform states. “For that reason, as explained elsewhere in the platform, we do not accept the Supreme Court’s redefinition of marriage and we urge its reversal, whether through judicial reconsideration or a constitutional amendment returning control over marriage to states.”
That’s only the beginning of the platform’s anti-LGBT content though. An amendment offered by the Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins endorses the thoroughly debunked practise of conversion therapy for LGBT kids, “support[ing] the right of parents to determine the proper treatment or therapy, for their minor children.”
Another section calls to oppose the Obama administration’s move to protect trans schoolchildren’s right to access the restroom of their gender identity. “We support and encourage the common sense practice of protecting public safety and personal privacy by limiting access to restrooms, locker rooms, and similar facilities based on biological gender,” the platform reads.
Washington, D.C. delegate Rachel Hoff, the first and only openly gay member of the committee, was left emotional after trying and failing to soften the platform’s language on same-sex marriage. “All I ask today is that you include me and people like me,” she said, fighting back tears. “Freedom means freedom for everyone, including for gays and lesbians.”
Beyond LGBT issues, the platform supports following Donald Trump’s calls for an “America-first” trade policy, calls to teach the Bible as part of “American history”, and “congratulates” states that have declined to implement Common Core curriculum standards. Perhaps strangest of all, it also turns the party towards the real threat facing America today: internet porn.
“Pornography, with his harmful effects, especially on children, has become a public health crisis that is destroying the life of millions. We encourage states to continue to fight this public menace and pledge our commitment to children’s safety and wellbeing.”
