The Reagan Tape; Reagan as Witness: Friendly but Forgetful

Mr. Reagan, in turn, was polite and friendly, even when he was unable to recall, over and over during eight hours of testimony, numerous events in the Iran-contra affair and broader matters involving his Presidency.

At one point Mr. Reagan was asked about a report on a trip to Central America by Gen. John W. Vessey Jr., who was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1982 to 1985.

''Could you explain to the members of the jury who General Vessey was?'' Mr. Reagan was asked by Richard W. Beckler, Mr. Poindexter's lawyer.

''Oh dear, I could ask for help here,'' the former President replied. ''The name I know is very familiar.

I am wondering if --''

''This is in connection with a trip by the Joint Chiefs of Staff,'' Mr. Beckler said.

''Well, that - I don't - I don't think this was my military aide, but obviously he was in a position to do this if he was the Chief of Staff,'' Mr. Reagan said.
