SO Turkey shot down a Russian plane... Do they have a right to defend their own air space?

I just think what we would do if a Russian plane did not heed our warnings, I think we would do the same thing. We intercepted quite a few this summer..

Russia is a cold war problem from the 80's... nothing to see here... - Barack Obama

But this is not your fathers Russia. Due to weak foreign policy under the Obama administration Putin is the de facto world leader. Putin acts, and everyone else reacts. Also, Russia isn't the bad guy in the region since they [and lately, France] are the only ones serious about taking on ISIS.

But Barack was as wrong as usual.

Your fellow Islamic fighters are invincible, aren't they?

Until just recently, the USA majority did not support sending ground troops to fight Daesh forces, but we have been supplying air support and doing a lot of droning. If you are to be the leaders, you have to bring the most to the fight, I believe the USA is tired of using our resources for another leadership role. We can be a player, part of the team, that doesn't hurt.

I'm not sure how far from land these pilots flew, but international law recognizes sovereignty extends 12 nautical miles out over water. The problem with Russian pilots is that I'm sure they're primarily accustomed to harassing US and Canada. We typically intercept them more than 200 NM out, and once they see that they've caused us an inconvenience, they are satisfied and fly back to their recovery base.

My guess is that Turkey isn't dumb enough to engage Russian platforms outside of sovereign airspace, so the pilots likely got overly aggressive, and strayed within 12 NM. There's also plenty of means to respond to a challenge, by transmitting electronic and voice ID. Apparently these pilots just ignored the Turks.
