The CURRENT law will AUTOMATICALLY SUNSET at the end of 2012. It would have sunset at the end of 2010, but they extended the sunset clause.

This situation, in which congress MUST act to PREVENT a tax increase is VASTLY different than the usual situation in which taxes MAY be increased by an act of congress. This is exacerbated by the manner in which the current congress is continually split across party lines as if the chairs of the DNC and RNC were the only ones actually voting. The inability of the current congress to get past partisan votes makes it much more likely the current tax rates WILL sunset, and revert to the rates set by congress and President Clinton in 1998. As such, the current situation, which was set up by the inability of the democrats to get past their TAX AND SPEND mantra, makes tax increases probable, as opposed to the mere "potential" represented by a new congress every two years.

If you cannot see the very real and distinct difference, then I can only say good luck sucking donkey shit the rest of your life.
