The 1st Amendment, nor any amendment has anything to do with defining patriotism.....furthermore, patriotism is a rather relative term....
There are many Americans that refuse to defend the country, that ridicule the country, that burn the nations flag, some actually claim they
hate the country......are these patriots in the common sense of the word....personally, I would say they are not....many others will
defend their actions as rights of expression, many will qualify these actions as patriotic, if only in their eyes....
You can't claim to be a patriot only one your terms, the same way you can't claim to be honest, honorable or ethical, but only on your terms.....
Everyone has different values so the term patriot becomes somewhat flexible as to become practically meaningless ....
and to claim that dissent can't be unpatriotic in the eyes of others, or is always patriotic is just plain ignorance speaking.
