Do you own a GM car ?

I never understood the 'Buy American' nationalism regarding US auto makers. The vast majority of American Toyotas, Hondas, Kias, etc. are made right here in the good old USA by American auto workers. I buy cars based on value and reliability. I own two Toyotas and a Ford, I have owned about every make of car made at some time or another. I've never been real impressed with GM, other than their truck line. My first car was a '69 Chevy C-10 stepside... I wish I still had it.. they are going on ebay for $20k!

IF I buy a new car again, it will likely be a Ford. I was impressed that Ford took no bailout money, and even though my ultimate decision would be on value, all things being equal, I am going for the Ford.

None of the other pickup trucks are worth anything close to the American made trucks. They look pretty, but they just can't last like an American truck.

One of my work trucks is a GMC, 22 years old, runs awesome, still has the original exhaust system. Pretty impressive for a vehicle which spent it's entire life on an island surrounded by salt water.
It is my Nantucket truck.

That truck must have been built just before GM jumped the shark...the company my wife works for is still running a GMC tow truck older than yours (1987 C35), though that hasn't had its original exhaust system since the George H. W. Bush administration. Ofdd course, if youyr truck spent its entire life on Nantucket, I suspect it has fewer miles than trhat truck wound up in its first 2 years of service! (It has about 485,000 now.)

GM castrated their trucks long ago...after dropping the big B-bodies (1996) and basically letting the Astro vans wither on the vine (2001), they have done essentially nothing right.

Yeah, it has 124,000 miles. The catalytic converter clogged up just after 100k, the rest of the exhaust is still good. I think it must be stainless steel.

My 50's Pontiac, similar to this one,

is my daily driver. Clocked almost 20,000 care-free miles after a motor rebuild. Over 55 years on the road. That's GM dependability.

By your own numbers then, 50 out of 93 GM plants are located here, in America. If you don't feel that this larger than 50% number is enough to make them Amerian manufacturers, why on earth did you start a thread claiming "Ya just gotta love American Auto Manufactures...."???

My last 3 vehicles have been Fords. No regrets. Last year I bought my wife a 2007 Ford Focus SES ZX4 with 45,000 for $7,000. Great little car. The Focus was rated #2 behind the Honda Civic and ahead of the Toyota Corolla in both economy and reliability until recently when it leap frogged over Honda Civic to #1. I can see why. It's a neat little car. It's a blast to drive, reliable as hell and get's great gas mileage too.
