They were Indian, free blacks and European mixed blood people mostly on the East coast, but another group of them in Louisiana were called Red Bones. They tended to live separately. The ones I have known had very black , straight hair and very white skin.. Years ago they were often referred to as "Portugee".

Think mullatto. That was an old term for people of mixed race. A generation or 2 ago they said one drop of negro blood made you one.
