I have said this for quite some time. The article was a but odd in its link to libertarianism, but whatever.

Didja know that Florida cut budgetary funding for schools dollar for dollar after the lottery was started? Didja also know that Florida then started taking the school's lottery money to make up for other shortfalls in the budget?
The result? Florida schools are getting less money than ever.

Back in the 80's, WA got a state lottery passed by promising it would fund education. It's 2013, and all of the money now goes into our pathetic General Fund - meaning nothing is going to education anymore (since the state doesn't permit it's pet black hole to be audited, I can safely say that's most likely true).

Same in California. It was suppose to be additional money spent on education. Instead the politicians used it to replace existing money spent on education.

I have always seen the lottery as paying for a dream. For a buck, you get to spend a day or so thinking about what your life would be like if you won. It's fun to think about that, and worth a buck.
But I do feel bad for the folks who get obsessed with it, and go and spend a ton of hard-earned cash really trying to win the thing.

As Lorax said, it is buying a dream for a day (or a few days if you buy early). If you buy every now and again, not a big deal. But it can be a problem, especially for those that are desperate for a better life and see no other way to get there.
