You cannot understand. We have free speech, but we suffer the social consequences of what we say. There are limits to free speech too. He was not jailed for what he said. His tantrum was a display of hate and bigotry. He knew he was destroying his career. Why can't Reds understand that?
I was a fan of his cartoons for all 30 years. His slant on office politics strikes home regularly. I think he wanted an excuse to retire.

Agreed on free speech and consequences, as all rational people would agree. Disagreed that Adams knew he was destroying his career, since his actions appear to be irrational. What rational reason would he have for tanking his career? I submit there isn't one.
If he wanted to retire, all he had to do was say, "I retire. Have a nice day".

FWIW, yes, it's okay to be white or any other skin tone, just like negroid is a legitimate term. That said, as JPP displays daily, it's the context in which terms and phrases are used that determine if it is being used honestly.
Example: The dimwits running around calling Obama a "negro" are dishonest because their intent is to antagonize, divide and demean.
Saying "it's okay to be white" in the context Adams was using it and his pattern of behavior indicate he's not only being dishonest, but also racist.
If he's disgusted by Democrats bending over backwards with "wokeness", there are better, smarter ways to handle it such as emphasizing tolerance, unity and the rights of all Americans to enjoy our nation. He didn't do that. He chose sides.

What McWhorter describes is what Robin DiAngelo calls white fragility. As soon as woke became a national movement in 2020, a very specific kind of white people went into a racist panic. In the clearest terms yet, they saw their white privilege challenged. They developed a massive attack to redefine what woke means.
Naturally, the only people they tricked were each other: Mostly racist MAGA morons. They have been brainwashed to believe that woke represents the death of the country. In fact, woke represents the country's salvation and rebirth. The only thing dying is white oppression.
This conversation has been had millions of times for years. Nothing happened to Trump's free speech when Twitter banned him. Nothing happened to Adam's free speech when WaPo fired him. There are consequences for being assholes. They can continue to say whatever they want to say.
