He was an idiot if he was a pilot and made that statement. I am a private pilot and I can tell you that a Cessna 172 can barely land on 500 feet. An 875,000 pound jetliner will require about another 5,000 feet. Tightly packed dirt??? Yeah okay!! LMAO

There are a whole variety of factors that determine the length of runway need to land a plane like a 777 and come to a halt. Weight, headwind, outside temperature, reverse thrust and flap settings are all factors. All else being equal a plane takes off and lands in a shorter distance in cold air, as opposed than in the tropics, as the air is denser.
