Detroit Public Schools cuts GPA standard for sports

If you have students who are failing academically, they usually have put little or no effort into doing anything in school. The idea is toget them involved in sports, and their involvement and effort will increase.

I'm not sure its a good idea. But what is the downside? That kids will be dumb jocks instead of dumb dropouts?

I agree. I don't see a downside and the standard is still above passing.

They will also be pro sports fans boosting the economy in that regard.
Amazing how someone who cannot remember the 3 place figure for pi can remember how many yards rushing that Bum Stumble got in 75.

Being a sports fan does not do anything to boost the economy.

Some moron said, "If lowering academic standards is the carrot on a stick that gets them involved then so be it".....involved in what ? Sports ?
Remaining a happy moron like you ?

I'm just carrying the absurdity to its logical end....lower standards for everything.....be fair....

Should some idiots graduate school with sub-standard grades just because they jocks.....(nothing personal intended)
Whats the purpose ? To what end ?....What was accomplished by lowering standards besides a larger grad. class....

If standards have such little value....fuck 'em.....jocks or no jocks....fair is fair...equality for one an all.....

You are an idiot. Unless they are using some strange scale, they are not getting preferential treatment in relation to other students. Also, the lower standard is only for the first semester and reverts to 2.0.

No one pays attention to those standards. It was anything but an open secret at my school that the people in Sports were off-limits to any sort of discipline that would kick them off of their team. I was there as a coach walked in and harassed a teacher for not giving a person in sports good enough grades (he apparently forgot I was there). Whatever you set the limit at, corrupt coaches are going to ensure that their special sports stars exceed it, I can assure you that.

Well, that's not everywhere and I'm pretty sure the good ole days of just getting passed because you were good at a sport are long gone.

This past year three of the top offensive players on the school team that one of my sons plays on were all benched because they either got D's or F's on their interim report cards this year and that was during the playoffs and in the state of Virginia, which is right behind Alabama and Louisiana as far as football ferver goes in my opinion.

In my day, I got an "A" in music appreciation class even though I never showed up to it, I spent that time at the gym instead because I'd played football one year - that's about it though...

The year I took the SAT's, Franklin High in South Seattle had gotten caught inflating a baseball pitcher's grades. I took the test there, and joked to one of the officials if grade inflation applied to me on the test. The official just looked at me stone-faced, so I smiled and continued on my way.
