We didn't know Trump won until Way after midnight, because the swing states were so bloody close

I think popular vote matters because we shouldn't be a nation governed by the tyranny of the minority, but as far as decisive elections go, Obama's two elections were the only presidential contests of the 21st century which were called and over shortly after dinner, within an hour after West coast polling places closed. I hate elections where they don't know who won until the next day at the earliest.

Voting does matter. I'm very curious why, on average, 40% of Americans don't bother to vote. My best guess is that they feel it doesn't matter.
