Dems alone can't deliver Obama health care win
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama's push to overhaul health care needs Republican votes, lawmakers from both parties say.

Democratic and GOP officials acknowledged Sunday that Obama's ambitious plan would not pass without the aid of a doubtful GOP, whose members are almost united against the White House effort.

"Look, there are not the votes for Democrats to do this just on our side of the aisle," said Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., the chairman of the budget committee.

Rep. Jim Cooper, a Tennessee Democrat and a member of the fiscally conservative "Blue Dogs," said he doubts the Democratic-controlled House could pass a proposal as it's drafted now.

"We have a long way to go," Cooper said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, however, insisted she has the votes to move forward with the plan despite concerns among fiscally conservative fellow Democrats.

"When I take this bill to the floor, it will win. We will move forward, it will happen," said Pelosi, D-Calif.

Not so fast, Republicans said. Sensing a public uneasiness over the pace and price tag of the overhaul, Republicans said the longer the delay, the more the public understands the stakes of a policy that has vexed lawmakers for decades.

"We could have a plan in a few weeks if the goal is not a government takeover," said Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C. "We've never seen the government operate a plan of any kind effectively and at the budgets we talked about."

Democrats countered that their plans — and there are many iterations on Capitol Hill, as committees in the House and Senate work on versions — would expand coverage without adding to the deficit. Even so, they are likely to leave for an August recess without a vote.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said they are "80 percent" in agreement on what a final version will include and are making progress.

Obama adviser David Axelrod said, "Now, we're at the final 20 percent and we're trying to work through those details."

That final piece, however, will require GOP backing — something Sen. Mitch McConnell said was unlikely. The Senate minority leader said congressional Democrats are having difficulty selling a health care bill to their own members.

"The only thing bipartisan about the measure so far is the opposition to it," said McConnell, R-Ky.

Conrad and DeMint spoke with ABC's "This Week." Cooper appeared on CBS' "Face the Nation." Pelosi and McConnell were interviewed for CNN's "State of the Union." Gibbs spoke on "Fox News Sunday." Axelrod appeared on CBS' "Face the Nation" and CNN's "State of the Union."

It will be interesting to see what happens. Will this just slow down the process for health care reform or will special interest win the day and kill it all together?

I think the timing is critical, the ramp up for re-election is coming soon for the Congress, voting for unpopular legislation just before that particular run is unlikely. It may kill it for as long as two years before they bring it back up before Congress.

Either that or they will make the required compromises. Keep in mind that in most of the nation health care reform is very popular. It's the vast array of special interest lined up against health care reform that will be difficult to surmount.

According to Gallup this one is dead, only 40% of the nation is supporting it. It isn't special interest, it is the rough-shod way they attempted to force it past without any previous look by the people it will effect for eternity.

In short, the American people expect at least a condom, some lubricant and even a reach around..

Maybe if they removed the mandate he might get more than 50%, too many 20 somethings would get hammered.

I just don't see this passing, period. Maybe some extremely watered down version, but that's it.

Obama definitely botched this one, but I have always been wary of its prospects. When both Hillary & he were debating about universal healthcare, it all seemed very pie in the sky. Congress is not ready to pass legislation that is so sweeping; they weren't in '94, and they are not now...

I hope your wrong. We have a broken system that needs fixed. I doubt this is a problem the market can fix.

Yet it is a problem that a bunch of moronic politicians can solve?

The only way this gets fixed is if we do a true cost analysis of what goes into each bill issued by a doctor/hospital etc...

How much is fixed vs. variable?

What is the percentage of cost per bill that relates to insurance?

What is the percentage that goes to salaries/admin?

How much waste is their in the all-paper transactions that could be reduced with electronic records?

What is the percentage that goes to pay for equipment?

Etc...

Until we break these down, we are not going to be able to find ways to cut the costs.

I'm willing to bet there is some kind of "Pentagon Toilet Seat" style savings to be found in there. The costs have gone up out of proportion with any indicators.

exactly, but until we see a breakdown of where the increases have come from and how they effect the individual bills... we are never going to solve the cost portion of the equation. Without that, any so called 'reform' is meaningless as it will simply transfer the WAY we pay, not alter how much we pay.

your headline is complete crap. are you an idiot?

the dems don't need the reps to pass this. they're just looking to lay blame when their Piece of sh.. bill fails because it is a socialist load of crap.

This issue illustrates the usual failure and weakness of the Democratic Party .. and it illustrates that the party is controlled from the right.

WHEN, not if, healthcare reform fails, more Americans on the left will FINALLY realize the Democratic Party does not represent their interests.
