If public safety is the yardstick of civilization, chaos is just around the corner.

The age-old bargain between the people and government — we’ll pay your taxes, and you’ll protect us — is unraveling before our eyes. On a commuter train in Chicago on Nov. 17, a maniac doused 26-year-old Bethany MaGee with gasoline and set her on fire, shouting, “Burn alive, b——.”

The man charged with the crime had 72 prior arrests. At the time of the incident, he was on pretrial release for aggravated assault. The victim is fighting for her life.

Chicago has had the most homicides of any city for the past 13 years. For the past seven years, it has had the highest homicide rate of any city of more than 1 million people. The response of Mayor Brandon Johnson, who inhabits an alternate universe, was that the attack, though “horrible” and “horrific,” was “an isolated incident” and the city will continue to “invest more on its public transportation system” so passengers can be flambeed in comfort.

Democrats’ answer to any crisis, usually one they have created, is to spend more money where it will be least effective.

 
In Charlotte, North Carolina, on Aug. 22, Iryna Zarutska, a 22-year-old Ukrainian refugee, was stabbed to death on a commuter train. Her alleged assailant had 13 prior convictions and was free on bail pending trial for another violent crime. Why should career criminals be denied the opportunity to rack up more points while awaiting trial?

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, who, like Mayor Johnson, speaks fluent knee-jerk, said the attacker “suffered a crisis” and urged treating “mental health problems … with compassion.” It’s telling that her first reaction should be concern for the victimizer, not the victim.

On Nov. 23, a violent mob took over a Queens, New York, neighborhood, riding cars over lawns, setting a vehicle on fire and beating a couple who objected. In blue cities, street takeovers are increasingly common.

Marxist New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani wants to deploy psychologists to handle domestic disturbances. We’re assured they are competent to deal with nonviolent incidents, but a shouting match can quickly turn violent. What then? Instead of nightsticks, will Mr. Mamdani’s shrink squads carry syringes with Thorazine? Or perhaps they’ll get the parties involved to take classes on conflict resolution?

Urban crime is spiraling out of control. Under President Trump, from 2016 to 2020, violent crime fell 17%. Under President Biden, it rose 43%. Mr. Biden was focused on White nationalism, which he considers the real threat to our safety and security.

Since Mr. Trump put troops on the streets of the District of Columbia, our nation’s capital has gone from Chicago on a Saturday night to Casper, Wyoming, on a Sunday morning.

The left has spent decades fanning the flames of the urban holocaust that now confronts us.

Cashless bail lets predators awaiting trial back on the streets. The war on the police has had predictable consequences. From 2020 to 2021, during the George Floyd riots and the defund the police movement, there was a 45% rise in police retirements and a 20% rise in resignations.
 
The Democrats’ signature issue in 2025 is fighting the deportation of criminal aliens.

Their anti-U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement rhetoric makes the agency sound like a cross between the Gestapo and the mafia. Agents are said to “snatch people off the streets” and “terrorize neighborhoods.” Members of Congress try to storm detention facilities, while activists assault immigration officers.

In reality, under a policy of the worst first, murderers, rapists, pedophiles and other violent offenders are prioritized. The left’s position is that no one who is in the U.S. illegally should be deported unless due process is exhausted to the fullest, which could take years.

What is the purpose of government if not to keep us safe?

It fails at educating our children; witness reading and math scores. Its taxes and regulations stifle business. In blue states, it wants boys to shower with girls and drag queens to read storybooks to children.

Before government got into social engineering, we had police protection and courts that worked. Now we have urban anarchy, which is coming soon to small-town America.

Civilization requires justice for victims. Liberalism demands compassion for criminals.

Civilization takes determination and commitment. Liberalism is about harvesting votes by inciting minority fears.

Liberal crime policies aren’t just demented and dangerous; they are suicidal. We can watch in horror as a civilization slits its own throat.

Democracy insane by definition is trying the same thing multiple times expecting a different outcome. The Dems keep electing Democrats expecting crime to get better.
