Durbin: Race factored in Burris seating
March 1, 2009 10:40 PM

Sen. Dick Durbin, who advised Sen. Roland Burris last week to step down from the Senate, acknowledged today that racial considerations were at play in the decision by majority Democrats to seat Burris.

Durbin, a fellow Democrat and Illinois' senior senator, noted that Rep. Bobby Rush, a Chicago Democrat, appeared at Gov. Rod Blagojevich's announcement of his appointment of Burris and used racially charged language to defend the appointment.

"My colleague from Illinois, Congressman Bobby Rush, made strong statements along those (racial) lines," Durbin said on WGN-AM (720). "They were painful and hurtful, and it became part of this calculation."

Durbin also said he would work with Burris despite the political isolation surrounding the state's junior senator in Washington.

"His vote still counts, his signature is still necessary for critical appointments," said Durbin, the Senate's No. 2 Democrat in leadership. "I will be working with him whenever there's the need for both Illinois senators to be involved in projects. I'm going to try to work with him as well as I can."

Burris met Sunday afternoon at a South Side church with ministers and friends who offered prayers for him to face adversity in weeks ahead.

Burris spoke to parishioners briefly and shared what he has accomplished in Washington since being seated. The list included helping to get the stimulus package, a voting rights bill and a measure to honor the work of slaves who helped build the country approved.

"Let me assure that I will continue to serve you with the best of my ability, and I will not let you down," Burris said to the crowd.

LOL

I don't know which one is more pathetic, democrats or blacks.

"White children, in the main, and whether they are rich or poor, grow up with a grasp of reality so feeble that they can very accurately be described as deluded--about themselves and the world they live in. White people have managed to get through their entire lifetimes in this euphoric state, but black people have not been so lucky: a black man who sees the world the way John Wayne, for example, sees it would not be an eccentric patriot, but a raving maniac." James Baldwin

Of course it was. The whole picture of Harry Reid blocking the doorway to the Senate Chamber to keep a black man out of an all white club....

The Democrats caved on this and Blago had the last laugh watching them fall all over themselves in panic. :cof1:

Uh-huh, aren't you white?
This silly quote has nothing to do with the original post, which is that Durbin caved into seating an appointed senator from an extremely corrupt politician simply because he was uncomfortable with the race card being used against him. He'd rather be PC than do the right thing and moreover there is a bigger wrong here in thinking that Burris HAS to be the appointed senator because Obama who was black is gone, so they feel it's fair to seat another black to make up for the loss, rather than look for the best candidate.

THE BLACKS ARE COMING !!!

EVERYBODY RUN FOR YOUR LIVES.

Stupid ass people.

African-Americans are a major constituency of the Democratic Party, the most loyal of all demographics, and democrats don't get elected to the White House without them. Concern about your most loyal demographic that is badly needed for the party to succeed is called "politics."

To the really stupid ass people of the nearly all white Republican Party, who have gotten their asses spanked in the last two elections, to them this seems a perfect opportunity to demonstrate why they are really stupid ass people.

Republicans look for "the best qualified people" without consideration of race or demographics?

Only REALLY stupid ass people would believe that bullshit.

It just happens that all the "best qualified people" republicans choose are white, usually men, not gay, and christian only.

Stupid ass people.

Yeah, I have that dream too.

Unfortunately, it's still just a dream.

Until this changes: "African-Americans are a major constituency of the Democratic Party, the most loyal of all demographics...." it will always be a dream.

Political party preference has absolutely ZERO to do with human and civil rights.

African-Americans have been in America for almost 400 years and only relatively free for 42 years.

At one time almost all African-Americans were republicans.

Today, the Republican Party is almost exclusively white.

What does political party have to do with being judged by the color of ones skin?

At the time he was a perfectly legal appointment.

They could have gone bullistic on him but at that time the man himself was accused of nothing.

I dont care what anyone tries to imply about why they seated him I dont think at the time going bullistic on Burris was called for.

If it was as evident he paid something for the seat as it is now I would have been ready for the Bullistic reaction.

Black, white, red, yellow, brown, tawny, cream, mocha, olive or what ever fucking color of people you name they all have just the same ability to be corrupted by any of lifes challenges and turns.

To think anything other than this is not only prejudice its complete stupidity.

One is not more moral or less moral.

Thanks for the history lesson. You left out the part where the Republicans sponsored civil rights legislation in opposition to Democrat plans for segregation at least 5 times.

Since the Democrat plan to openly subjugate blacks failed, they've changed tactics and given them special rights and agreed to take care of then cradle to grave. This has been hugely successful since it has resulted in the decimation of the black family and reduced expectations, while at the same time ensuring their votes.

If this is true why is it that black people stand for this?

I appreciate the civility in which you've approached this subject, but what you just said is mindlessly silly.

First, I didn't leave out anything and said that African-Americans were once nearly all republican .. but that was when the Republican Party, which began as an anti-slavery party, did not stand against the interests of African-Americans. To suggest that blacks should have remained republicans when Nixon embarked on his southern strategy that openly courted southern racists would be mindlessly ignorant, do you not agree?

Additionally, those "special rights" you're talking about are relative civil and human rights .. an agenda taken upon by the Democratic Party, not the Republican Party, do you agree?

Even with affirmative action, which benefits white women more than anyother demographic, African-Americans are still only relatively free in a country we've been in for 400 years.

What program instituted by democrats "takes care of blacks cradle to grave" that does not benefit white people? Surely you're not stupid enough to suggest welfare.

What ensures black votes for the Democratic Party is people just like you.

Why would I or anyother black person want to align themselves politically with someone like you? That makes no sense.

I have an entirely different perspective of history, culture, and society than you do, and you come with a warped an delusional perspective of my people.

Why would I get in bed politically with such a thing?
