Normal people would be sympathetic. She only recently learned the circumstances of her entry into the country when she was child. Her parents for years had misled her, causing her to assume she was a citizen. Having learned her actual status, she faced her peers in the legislature and told them.

What law did she break? Please be specific.
She did not say she was an illegal alien, so no one is lying. She said she was "illegal" because some of the paperwork filled out by her father was wrong, and now she is a citizen. If you feel that wrong paperwork is so egregious that her citizenship needs to be taken away, there is a process for denaturalization, but it would difficult, and would not make her currently holding office retroactively illegal.
Laos is a completely separate country from Vietnam. Laotian refugees were allowed to apply to enter this country, but there was no absolute permission to enter this country. Technically speaking, if any part of that application was wrong, it was voided.
