Virginia state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds was seriously injured in an assault at his house in Bath County, west of Charlottesville.

A second person inside the home was found dead, according to Virginia State Police.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that Deeds (D-Bath) was stabbed and critically injured and that the dead person is his son, Gus, who suffered a gunshot wound.

Deeds, 55, is best-known for his unsuccessful bid for governor in 2009. He bested two Democratic rivals – Brian Moran and Terry McAuliffe – to win the party nomination, but went on to lose the general election to Robert McDonnell by a 17-point margin.

That marked Deeds’s second loss to McDonnell: The two men also squared off in the 2005 attorney general race, which was so close it went to a recount. McDonnell prevailed in the end by 360 votes.
