Democracy for everyone in California!

Right now we are looking at the possibility of 39 City ballot measures in San Francisco for the November election. Additionally there will be 17 statewide ballot initiatives. So a total of 56 measures.

At a certain point why do we even have elected officials? Or is this something we should be celebrating hence Bill Maher proclaiming "scoreboard" for California liberal policies "winning"?

Realistically I wonder how many people are legitimately going to sit down and read to understand all 56 ballot measures?

I like direct democracy better than rich folks representing the rest of us..

But there is a downside, & most ppl are not going to read/be knowledgeable about many & will be influenced greatly by "TV" adds & the biggest mouths around the water cooler..

As I am sure you can recall some of them have been pretty tricky, as in voting yes actually means no etc...

Will we be voitng on important stuff like not sending more water down to la??

here (florida) we can only amend the state constitution -it takes 60% - and we got to58% last time for medical marijuana -
only Scotts election stopped it.
This time it will go thru, and there is one about guaranteed vacation time for full time employees -which never wouldhave happened.
So it's a good thing

SO how is it working?? Did they switch the whole state over to part time workers??

If you live here then you know we often do budgets by balloting at the voting booth. A horrible way to run the state. No need to pay elected officials if we do the budgeting ourselves.

I live about 90 miles from you, as the crow flies...... You know where Elk Grove is, south of Sacto??

Then what would those career politicians do all day??

I am familiar with Elk Grove. If you are a basketball fan I used to go to Bill Cartwright's basketball camp growing up and he was an Elk Grove native.

LOl... Yes, I am familiar w/ him.. I use to work w/ his step-daughter... I have meet him a few times as he still has family here.

My X sister-in law had her locker right under his @ Elk Grove High....

Was it held her in EG??

It was actually held at Sonoma State University. Not sure how or why they picked it for the location.

Not sure if you've ever seen his wife but she is his high school sweetheart and a 5'0 white woman. The two foot height difference alone stands out but when you add black and white it is quite the eye catcher. lol...

I hate direct democracy, but when you have a system as worthless as California government, and the initiative and referendum process are available, you kind of just have to go for it. We have similar problems in WA.

LOL, I have a couple cousins not far from you in Milton.. They only complain about the weather...

It is difficult & often complicated & the voters are not well informed on the issues..... SOmetimes the courts just overturn it, so it was a waste of time & money..
