Sure, the same cultural push makes homosexual people, overweight people, etc. being more public about their identity. It doesn't mean there are more gay people, just more who admit it because they are less afraid of the bigots who berate them for it.
None of those are the same as the transgender issue. Someone who is gay doesn't "think" they are gay. People who are fat are fat. With trans people they merely think they are indifferent gender. They aren't actually that other gender. It's like people with anorexia, they think they are fat. Its detrimental to them to go along with their altered judgement just because they think they are fat. It's ridiculous
