IIRC, deafness is certainly a disqualifier. Same for blindness.

My maternal grandfather was a farmer who lost an eye in his teens and wasn't allowed to serve in WWII.

IIRC, he's a Vietnam-era Naval vet. While I am a "Vietnam-era vet" too, I think he actually deployed to Vietnamese waters. I was a tad too late but still qualified for the "Alive in '75" medal. LOL

Agreed the accusations of "stolen valor" or self-proclamations about service aren't a privilege. It is character-defining, however.

I was Marine Corps Reserve in '75, only going active in the summer until after college graduation. Active in late '79. When I was RIF'd in 85 and went Navy, I ended up on the Saratoga on a Med deployment. It was a "Love Boat" cruise with lots of port visits in France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Israel and Egypt.

My father quit school when he was 17 to enlist in the Navy in 1943. He was on one of the ships providing Naval bombardment at the Marshall Islands Naval Battle and the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
He went ashore in the Philippines and was there when the prisoners were rescued from the Bataan Death March camp, but never went into detail of how badly injured they were when they
were brought back. He returned to the states after the war and was honorably discharged in 1949. He received a WWII Heroes Recognition Medal from the PA.State Representative.
.He was a hard working, wise and honorable man his whole life. My father is my hero, always was and always will be. He taught me well.
