'Deal with the devil': Ex-Republican warns GOP senators have 'no off ramp' now

Let It Burn!

A former Republican strategist warned lawmakers in the GOP that there's no "off ramp" for them from the deal they made with President Donald Trump.

As part of a panel discussion on "Deadline White House," host Nicolle Wallace had two legal analysts who remained optimistic about the state of the United States and the rule of law.

"So, Tim, it falls to you and me to pop the hopium balloon," quipped Wallace to The Bulwark's Tim Miller.

Miller said there is a world that exists outside of politics where normal people have no idea how bad Trump is. It's the other category he takes issue with.

"I think that there's a category of people who know what, that they're making a deal with the devil, and they're making a deal with the devil. And that includes pretty much the entire Republican Party and a bunch of other folks," said Miller. "And we've come to not expect anything from him. I do think over the first three months, there was another category of people who really were just kind of like very uncertain. They're like, how did he win? I don't understand how he won. Maybe he will be better than I think. I don't know, maybe the right bet here for the short term is to try to cut a deal."

He said he wouldn't offer them an "alibi," but at the very least, he could "understand" such a position. That group of people isn't in the "resistance," he said. However, they're people who are starting to question whether they should distance themselves from Trump.

"And I do think that is encouraging, and I think that that is rational," Miller said.

He then looked at the downside of that "deal."

"The people that have made the deal with the devil, though, their only way out is for him to gather as much power as possible, right?" Miller continued. "Like there's no off-ramp at this point for Republican senators. Like there's no off ramp at this point for people that are knee deep in Trump, either from a business perspective or, you know, from working in the administration."

He said that those would be the people who believe giving him the most power possible is the way to go. Then respond to criticism by maligning and smearing any opposition.

"And he does have a lot of power, and they do have Congress. They did appoint a lot of judges. There have been some good judges standing up, right? The executive has taken a lot of authority. We've seen some encouraging stuff from the Supreme Court, but we don't really know. You know, the big one hasn't really come yet," Miller said.

He closed by saying, "I think that it's alarming the degree to which the people that have gotten on board with Trump are trying to press the accelerator right now at a moment of real peril."

At some point, Trump will have a bunch of protesting Americans shot ala' Kent State. The active military won't do it, but like Kent State, a MAGAt Governor who sold his soul to Trump will order his National Guard to do it. I expect it to happen in the heat of Summer. Most likely next Summer but it could be this year.

trump is 100% responsible for what comes next. The party of trump, formerly known as the Republican Party, is also 100% responsible for what comes next. Had they remained the Republican Party, they could have had less responsibility, but it is now too late for them.

So now the only question is what comes next. If it is great things, then trump, and the party of trump, are in great shape. I think we all know it is not going to be great things.

You don’t get to speak for everyone, Never Rght Walter.

The American people spoke…loudly last Nov. and they roundly rejected far left Democratic Socialist loons like you.

They are the Republican party IN NAME ONLY.
Conservatives like Reagan have to be spinning in their graves when they look and see what has happened to their great party.

Recession is what comes next. Trump won't back down because he's afraid of being seen as weak and a loser so he'll drive the US economy into a landfill.

And lower gas prices going down because of the Saudis raising their production and dropping prices may help soften the blow a bit, but with less People travailing it might not help that much.
And we won't be having goods in the supply chain to move from place to place so that will help keep gas cheap because they won't be selling as much as they did.

True. Gas prices or not, when the store shelves start to empty, they'll blame Trump.

I actually feel sorry for the Republicans. They have tied themselves to a falling star, and cannot escape the disaster to come.

trump is bleeding support, and the recession is not even here yet... And it looks like a bad recession...

There is a real possibility that Republicans will lose the Senate, and that would be huge.

They lack the spine to stand up for what is right and honor their oaths.
I don't know about you but I read in the news almost every day where there are MAGAS crying " I didn't vote for THIS "
Some of them are realizing Trump's tariffs are hurting not only the US economy but themselves too.
Auto companies shutting down, GM and Ford laying off people. Farmers crying they can't afford the things they need to stay in business and may have to declare bankruptcy .
Those are just some of the things they are saying they did not vote for.
Well all I can say is they got what they thought they wanted now we all have to suffer. and it has ONLY just started.
MAGAS are crowing about a good jobs report I want to wait and see what it is going to be like in Sept, Oct. after all the tariffs have gone into place.

I'm curious to see if Trump will try to stop the Midterms.
In normal times, no one would even think that was possible. trump is talking about arresting Supreme Court judges for deciding against him, so no one can be sure.

Here is a question to the group, if trump decides to cancel elections, would that be a step too far?

The MAGAts in Congress need to start listening to their constituents.
