The birther movement was a joke compared to Russia Gate.

For one, as you pointed out, it wasn't mainstream. Second, there was no talk of impeachment, appointing special prosecutors [for what crime, exactly, no one can specify], the media wasn't nearly as breathless in their reporting of it.

But probably the biggest distinction are the leaks. There wasn't an army of anonymous sources [most leftover from the previous administration] aligned against Obama. Obama had no 'enemy within' to contend with.

The press was hesitant to be too critical of the first black president so they were absolutely supine by comparison.
