Crowds flock to reopened Jacksonville beaches as Florida hits record coronavirus case

All good stuff, but anything not being hit directly by UV rays can last for an hour according to the data. That's a lot of door knobs and railing, trash can lids, footballs, frisbees, etc.

While adults can be cognizant of social distancing, not touching their face, washing their hands, etc, kids are not. By adult standards, children are insane and cannot be trusted to remember anything for long. They might remember the rules "most of the time" but all it takes is once and within a week, the entire family is infected. Grandma and Grandpa too if they meet.

That's the reality. I still fully support opening the economy and just take the hit. It's hard to cull a herd, especially of people, but sometimes it's necessary. This is one of those times. Our nation has no resources left. It can't stay locked down over the summer or the vast majority of middle class and lower income Americans will be starving, bankrupt and ruined. We, the People have to face up to the fact up to 9 Million Americans will die because our nation was stupid for 20 years. It'll be a watershed moment. That is, unless a miracle cure or vaccine is developed by the Fourth of July...but I doubte it will.
the kids dont seem to get infected - maybe there is an exception to the rule -but that's the rule.
Of course touching and coming into contact with an adult is how it's passes.

The beach has no hard surfaces - some beaches have a public walkway, but they are usually wood railings
..anyways the thing is the same --don't touch, social distance.
I personally would not feel a need to wear a mask because of the sea breezes.

Aside from these particulars yes we have no choice but to open up at this point. It's almost 6 weeks now.
we have to learn how to run the country and mitigate the virus;and thay means we need to get going

Of course, Trump gave a big chunk of our revenue to the 1% with his tax cut.

I think there is a linear scale representing the concern of Americans which ranges from 'This is just a hoax' to 'I'm not coming out of my house for the next two years'. The majority of Americans are somewhere in the middle of that scale, and therein lies the problem with 're-opening'. For example, 60% of Americans who have attended sporting events and concerts in the past will not do so until a vaccine is developed. Restaurants are being opened at 25% capacity, and will probably not reach that level. Movie theaters, maybe they will be at 50%, and will probably not reach that level. Retail stores? Most brick and mortar only stores are probably in their death throes. Our economy is driven by consumer spending, and with all these people out of work, consumer spending is not going to return to anywhere near pre-Covid levels until a vaccine is developed. This will be a slow and painful recovery under the best of circumstances. So I doubt that even throwing the doors open would had the kind of impact you hope for, but it could well lead to a resurgence of the virus, and repeat of what we just did come September/October. We've already seen a significant upward estimate of the death toll, and obviously 60K is not a realistic number any longer. I don't think at this point we could see what you're looking for, even if it was the desire of the powers that be. It's too late for that.

I’m so glad you’re almost certainly wrong lol.

But it’s good see you’ve come to your senses on opening up. We can’t stay locked down over what *might* happen. Any number of things ‘might happen’ including the epidemic just cycling down on its own.

The UV study just confirms what was expected: the China virus is susceptible to UV radiation—most viruses and bacteria are. Being susceptible to humidity too, is a bonus.

So there’s even more data that suggests we need to open up.

Oh please stop making stuff up, the Dept of Homeland Security says otherwise. As for Florida ask anybody who lives there if it's humid now!

Covid-19 killed by sunlight, warmer temperatures, humidity: US research

"Our most striking observation to date is the powerful effect that solar light appears to have on killing the virus, both on surfaces and in the air. We've seen a similar effect with both temperature and humidity as well. Increasing the temperature and humidity or both is generally less favourable to the virus," Bill Bryan, chief of the science and technology directorate at the US Department of Homeland Security, said.

The main things to know about Havana Poon is that he always supports heterodoxy, his sources are therefore always extremely suspect, his agenda is pro dirty fuel and climate denial, he is a born troll, and he is obsessed with a left wing spiritual hippie guitarist trapped in a Dorian box for the last 50 years because it pays. With Santana, it is almost like a genius was promised at age 25 that if he never did anything creative again, a bag of gold would be dropped on his door in perpetuity. He has been slurping it up ever since, as reliably as the Beach Boys singing "help me Rhonda"

I could set my watch by Carlos' repeated riffage.

On the bright side, Grajonca puts in some effort and that makes it more entertaining to humiliate him.

low dose Uv is gonna be a good solution long term, for any other virus as well

Who told you that kids don't contract this disease? Who told you kids are immune? If that was true, why are the schools and daycare centers shut down?

Business will return to normal. 97% of Americans will either be barely afflicted or heal over the summer and fall. 3%, of course, will be dead. We'll bury our dead and move forward just like our American ancestors always did.

Going out or hiding is a matter of personal choice. God Bless America! Land of the Free, Home of the Brave.

I've supported opening up and you say I'm wrong? WTF?

When are you claiming I supported putting Americans under house arrest? Cite a post please.

I think it’s going to take some time before consumer confidence returns. A result of that will be businesses going under that can’t operate at 50%. There’s no way I’m going to a concert or movie theater until I feel confident I won’t be infected.

There is always a transition period in things like this but this isn't 9/11 or the banking collapse. It's a disease. Most people think they are immune or "no worse than the flu" as shown by people on this forum. People will be anxious to get out to both make and spend money. The economy should be humming along by Election Day.....and the funeral industry will see a huuuuge boost in operations. Maybe simple cremations will become more popular.

Hello dukkha,

all virus is sensitive to humidity and temps. the only question is at what levels -that does vary

If a temperature of 98.6F combined with being immersed in mostly water-based fluids would kill the virus then as soon as it entered the human body it would be done for.

Beaches are opening up here full time starting on Mon. May 4! Woo hoo. Still restricted as far as chairs and laying out, just walking / exercise, but still....

Some businesses will be opening in the near future also.

Or mass graves. I wondered why the state of NY didn’t cremate the unclaimed?

Let's see. The size of a coronavirus particle is around 125nm.

To a coronavirus particle, a grain of sand looks like a massive hard surface.

Business returning to normal is simply wishful thinking. We won't have a 3% mortality rate because people won't allow it to happen. It will go up. The question is how much it will go up. More social gatherings will equal more infections. There will probably be major outbreaks in other US cities, and those cities will have to shut down yet again. This thing simply doesn't end because we want it to. The economic crisis ends when the public health crisis is abated. There are simply not enough people willing to accept your scenario. Me included.

Hello Dutch Uncle,

I know it's easier to blame one person than 100 Senators and 435 House Reps but the fact remains Trump didn't give that tax cut; Congress authorized it and Trump signed it.

It would be just as disingenuous to blame all of Congress for the irresponsible tax cut as it was for DT to gather only the Republicans for the photo-op to sign the bipartisan stimulus package.

Disagreed. The reverse is true: It's wishful thinking that people can lock themselves at home for 6-12 months, watch their children's future evaporate and their businesses go under in order to save 3% of the weakest members of society.

This is a war and, in war, 3% dead is an acceptable number.

If a kid's future evaporates because we have 6-12 months of social distancing, then that future wasn't a good one to begin with.

How does remote learning result in the evaporation of a kid's future?

We need to stay inside as long as it takes. Opening anything back up without testing or a vaccine will merely proliferate the spread of the virus. Why is this so hard for people to understand?

Does the free market NOT ADAPT to new market conditions? If what you're saying is true, that the free market is destroyed by 6-12 months of social distancing, then that free market wasn't a good model to begin with.
