Even in WWII, battleships turned out to be a mistake. They did not realize it at the beginning of the war, but they mostly realized it at the end. It has been about a hundred years since they were relevant.

Battleships made sense as a steady firing platform, when such things were important. With planes, guided missiles, and even just better fire control, a steady firing platform is not that important. Instead, you are left with a concentration of thousands of sailors as targets, with no reason to risk their lives.

Trump has no idea what he is talking about here......not that it matters.....we barely have any ship building capacity.

We are making aircraft carriers, and therefore could make battleships. They are roughly the same in size. Aircraft carriers give us a capability for that size, but battleships give us nothing and give our enemies easy targets.

It bothers me that any of our aircraft carriers are named for a President, Admiral, politician, or any other public figure. They used to be named for things more important to the nation than some fleeting political hack or another
