U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy, who represents the 4th Congressional District, was approached by a woman who pointed a gun at him while he was parked in a church parking lot Sunday night, according to a statement from the Spartanburg Public Safety Department.
An incident report states Gowdy was waiting to pick up his daughter at First Baptist Church of Spartanburg when a woman approached with a black handgun and told the congressman to stop following her. Gowdy reportedly told the woman that he had just pulled into the lot and was waiting on his daughter to get out of church.
After trying to explain a second time, Gowdy put is car in reverse, backed away from the woman and drove away as the woman chased his vehicle, the report states. The congressman drove to City Hall and notified officers, who escorted him back to the church to safely pick up his daughter.
Officers and Gowdy then went back to City Hall to file a report, and while driving there, city officers located and arrested Gloria Yvonne Brackett, 52, of 6139 Brookwood Valley Circle, Atlanta.
According to online jail records, Brackett has been charged with unlawful carrying of a pistol and pointing and presenting a firearm. She is scheduled to have a bond hearing at 2 p.m.
Spartanburg Public Safety officers have scheduled a news conference for 11:30 a.m. Monday to discuss the case.
