A man trying to sell his car on Craigslist has a warning for others after the alleged buyer stole the vehicle during a brazen encounter in Minneapolis.

The 25-year-old man said he doesn't want his name used, but did speak with FOX 9 over the phone on Monday.

All of this started when he tried to sell his BMW 5-series on Craigslist. When he went to meet with the interested party, he ended up getting maced, and had his car stolen.

This isn’t the first Craigslist car deal to turn violent in the metro. Loua Lor tried selling a souped-up sports car on Craigslist when he was shot and killed during a supposed test drive.

A 20-year-old man pleaded guilty to second-degree theft for the robbery of two people who’d responded to a Craigslist post advertising a car for sale.

The robbery happened after he posted an car for sale on Craigslist and then met a woman who saw the ad and was interested in buying the vehicle.

She brought her 15-year-old cousin along, court records show.

According to charging papers, all three got into the vehicle. Jones then pulled out a gun and demanded cellphones and money from the woman and her cousin.

She said she had more cash at her apartment. They drove there, and the man told the woman she had three minutes to bring back $1,000, or they’d shoot the teenager.

There is a common scam car buyers need to be aware of. It’s called Curbstoning and it happens every day to naïve car buyers. You see an ad on Craigslist.

It is the car you are looking for and the pics look good. You call and speak to the owner and he tells you about the car and says the right things.

He’s had it a while, it’s treated him well and he is selling for an innocuous reason. You ask to see the car.

You go there and he meets you out at the curb where the car is parked. You walk around the car and even take it for a test drive. Everything seems legit. You haggle on the price and strike a deal. You pull out your cash.

These kinds of shady deals are referred to as Curbstone deals. They usually are being done by people who are dealers pretending not to be dealers or by people who are not dealers but ought to be because they sell too many cars. Many people don’t bother to get licensed. Background checks can be hard to pass because of a felonious past, or maybe they don’t want to pay the small-business-crushing $75 fee.

Non-dealers sell cars all day long from the curbside, the local parking lot, or wherever else they can park a car.

Often, they “skip” the title by not recording their own name in the chain - signing the title from the person they bought the car from over to you directly. The upshot of this is it looks as if you bought the car from their seller and the curbstoner manages to stay off the radar.

Private sellers offer no warranties while used car dealers are bound by used car rules established by the Federal Trade Commission (as well as state and local laws). They can also fold up their tents and steal off into the night easily because they use cell phone numbers you can't trace.

With a curbstoner, you don't find out there's a problem until it's too late. Your money is gone and you have no recourse.

I know, it shatters your world view to believe that a total stranger might try to mislead you for profit on the internet.

Police confirm that the man who was shot and killed Monday night was answering an ad on Craigslist.

A woman said she opened the front door to leave her house just after 9 p.m. Monday. That's when she saw a car had crashed into a tree in her front yard.

When police arrived, they discovered the driver, James Jones Jr., 21, was dead from a gunshot wound.

It's unknown if he was conscious at the time that he crashed or if he was killed instantly.

Marietta police said Jones answered a Craigslist ad for an iPhone 6 that was for sale.

According to police, when Jones arrived, he was robbed and shot by the suspects, who posted the ad.

A man charged with shooting 37-year-old Larry Wilkins to death over a Ford Mustang the victim was selling on Craigslist was convicted Wednesday of first-degree murder.

Shelby County Criminal Court Judge Paula Skahan sentenced Martin S. Henderson to life for the killing.

Henderson was 17 years old when he planned with two other people to rob someone on Craigslist, said Assistant District Attorney Sam Winnig.

To contact the victim, an application was used to create a false phone number and Wi-Fi calling was used.

Henderson drove to the Sycamore Lake Apartments, where Henderson shot and killed the victim.

He then took the Mustang and drove away.

A teen girl shot and killed a man as she and her boyfriend tried to rob the victim of his Playstation 4, police say.

The victim, 28-year-old Daniel John Zeitz of Roswell, Georgia, met up with the couple after posting a Craigslist ad to sell the gaming console. The alleged shooter is an unnamed 16-year-old girl whose 16-month-old baby was sitting in the car, only a few feet away during the robbery, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Police Sgt. Ron Momon told the paper that the suspect and her boyfriend, 20-year-old Nathaniel Vivian, met Zeitz in an apartment parking lot, posing as potential buyers.

A couple said they're happy to be alive after being shot at and robbed during a Craigslist sale.

Police said the couple planned to meet a woman at an intersection to buy a truck. When they showed up, a group of men wearing dark-colored hoodies approached them with guns and demanded their money.

"The gentleman had the gun in my face," Eugene Rose said. Rose said the group of men had AK47s pointed at him and his wife.

The suspects shot into the couple's car as the couple drove away. The men ended up stealing $16,000 that the couple brought to purchase the pick-up truck.

Surveillance video captured by a neighbor's camera shows the couple pulling off in their car as the robbers opened fired.

Police believe the whole thing was a setup. The people behind the Craigslist ad never intended to sell the couple a truck. They just wanted to take a big haul of cash.

The couple said it's a lesson learned.

Charges will be filed Tuesday against a 19-year-old man arrested in the killing of a woman who answered his Craigslist ad for a babysitter.

Katherine Ann Olson was found dead in the trunk of her car after she answered the ad for a nanny on the popular website.

Olson, 24, was killed after responding to a babysitting ad posted on Craigslist.

Her family said Olson was a very trusting young woman who would take babysitting jobs she found online.

One of those ads took her to a park Thursday morning.

"It seemed kind-of fishy, but she was just going to check it out and meet them," said Sarah Richter, Katherine's sister.

Police found Olson's purse in a park, then discovered her body in the trunk of her car.

The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. at West 26th Avenue and Pierce Street. Investigators said two men were sitting in a vehicle after responding to the ad.

A white sedan occupied by a male and a female then pulled in behind the vehicle and a man about 25 years old got out and approached the two men in their vehicle, police said.

The suspect demanded the men get out of their vehicle and shot one of them. The male suspect left in the white sedan.

The female suspect got into the victims' vehicle and fled the scene.

It all happened after an arranged meeting through Craigslist.

A man met a woman at a Walmart and both drove separately to an area on West Farm Road 144. That's when two men got out of the woman's vehicle, pointed a handgun at the man and demanded money.

"It's not Craigslist you have to be scared of," said police spokeswoman Lisa Cox. "It's the people using Craigslist you need to be cautious about."

Police suggest always meeting in public, well-lit places with businesses around that likely have surveillance video in the case something goes wrong.

"A place that is desolate without a lot of traffic or lighting is not a good idea," Cox said. "You don't ever know what people's intentions are."
