There’s an old saying that goes: “To get a little, you have to give a little,” and that saying could not be more evident than right now in regards to the economic conditions here in the United States. Being from Arkansas, which is a state much like Texas (or Gov. Rick Perry, as both decided to get political makeovers from Democratic to Republican), conservatism is the new antidote for everything that ails the country right now. Consequently, there is no shortage of bigoted blame to go around, much of which lands squarely in the lap of President Obama. This is a state where conservative propaganda is quickly, eagerly, and willingly becoming akin to political gospel, along with an automatic congregation having a vested interest in making sure that the “message” spreads.
The main reason such messaging must continue is because, as Rep. Michele Bachmann loves to chant out on the campaign trail, President Obama must be a “one-term president.” Conservatives like Bachmann love to cite the lack of jobs under his lousy economy as more than enough reason to can him. Never mind that these are the same people who eagerly supported policies which led to some of the largest job losses in American history, they now have the unmitigated gall to present the Republicans and the Tea Party as would-be “saviors” ready to come galloping to the rescue on their big, white horse with their big pair of ‘deficit scissors’ to clip Obama’s progressive wings and save America from Obama’s “failed, liberal policies,” not to mention liberalism and the Democratic way.
It’s a very intriguing argument, if you have the political hunger to feast from such a bowl, but those who choose to examine the menu in a little more depth will soon find that there is more to the story than conservatives are willing to espouse. As noted above, despite popular conservative beliefs, jobs were leaving this country long before President Obama became politically relevant, reaching a zenith during the previous Bush regime.
Despite this reality, Conservatives would like to have everyone believe that “job-killing” mechanisms like too much government regulation, too much taxation, too much employee health care responsibility, and not enough ways for an American business to turn a bigger profit, have all got behind the job creators in this country like a liberal, lynch mob of witch hunters and chased the job creators out of town and country.
The general conservative consensus goes something like this: corporations would love to come back to the United States, but big government liberalism would only rake them over the coals again with unfair, high taxes if they do decide to return. This is the type of conservative propaganda that passes for “gospel” in places like Arkansas, since no one deigns to mention the fact that taxes under the Obama administration are actually lower.
As stated in my book The Fear of Being Challenged: I Am the Realacrat, capitalism is like an ideological atomic bomb/weapon of mass destruction. When it is used in your favor, it is the most magnificent weapon of all time, but when it is used by your opposition, the results can be cataclysmic, as the very thing that built your playhouse becomes the force that annihilates it. There is a very thin line between the opportunities of capitalism and the consumption of greed, and it seems like the progressive ideology is the only current, political ideology that even attempts to call it out for what it is, and what it has the potential to become. One need look no further than the economic meltdown of 2008, along with all of the Wall St. shenanigans that had very little to do with the restriction of capitalism and everything to do with proliferation of outright greed!
Capitalism is like any other consumptive monster; very similar to a great white shark. It never grows tired of consuming its prey, and it never grows uninterested in overfilling its pantry, because more is good, and less is just a straw man excuse to acquire more! This is why some external regulation is necessary, much to the chagrin of Republicans, conservatives and corporate pimps, and there is only one entity strong enough and big enough to handle such a task. That entity is, of course, the federal government, which probably has a lot to do with the real reason why corporate carpetbaggers continue to flee overseas. The federal government is the critical control point/last line of defense, and if it is either unwilling or unable to legitimately serve that function, capitalism becomes the unchecked law of the land, which lends itself directly towards a chaotic return to “every man for himself, consume or be consumed,” in the proverbial dog-eat-dog world of capitalism run amuck!
When regulation allows capitalism to spread opportunities about, everybody wins, but when those same opportunities are only funneled to a select few, so too are the benefits afforded to those select few. So when President Obama comes out with his new jobs plan, he should take all of this into consideration, and as controversial as this will sound, here’s an idea: he could call for an immediate repeal of the Bush tax cuts. They could then be revamped into the Obama tax cuts, with a new and improved stipulation attached that reads: “Any corporation or small business that would like to have the Obama tax cuts re-implemented would have to earn them based on accomplishments made,” instead of dreams that should and expectations that would.
In other words, any business or employer that is able to expand and or hire would receive the Obama tax cuts, which would be the same basic tax cuts as the Bush tax cuts; only given for different reasons and at different intervals. One could call that subsidizing opportunity with incentives based on production instead of the rhetorical, broken promises of “Hold on, I’m coming. It just takes a while for it to trickle down!” And if a smaller, up and coming business achieved more growth and did more production than the traditional slop hogs such as big oil and other chronic gormandizers, it would be given more of an Obama tax cut than the big oil companies.
You can’t have capitalism without competition, and conservatives are supposed to love competition almost as much as they love the white, Christian God, so they should have no problem with it. The Government could take many of their current projects and outsource them, directly or indirectly in-house. It could also use a little collective bargaining to the people’s advantage, by selecting U.S. companies that would hire the most American workers. All the government would really have to do is oversee it to an extent to make sure the work is done properly according to codes, and infrastructure would be a great place to start.
And to be fair, if the sluggish, Humpty Dumpty corporations ever decided to get up off of their corrupted, rotund backsides for a change and actually relocate some of their Napoleonic empire back into the United States, they would receive “The Big One,” which would be a super tax cut made specifically available for such an event. Republicans and Tea Baggers have managed to turn the idea of investments into a dirty, big spending, socialistic word, but if it can help bring back American jobs, the score should read: “socialistic investments, one; conservative fear mongering, zero.”
The capitalism monster is just like us. If we feed it too much unhealthy fat, it becomes slothful and less productive to society, but if we begin feeding it a leaner diet of high economic protein, it will no longer need to consume as much as it becomes a leaner, stronger, more agile form of capitalism; capable of doing more to strengthen its environment, which will in turn strengthen capitalism as a preferred economic model. As farfetched as this might seem, it’s actually a well-documented and credibly confirmed production methodology, and it is within the illegal drug trade that this idea has proved to be effective.
It’s called “Crackhead Economics.” Growing up in my highly unemployed, Black community alongside poverty and drug dealers galore, crack economics meant big business then, and it still means big business now. The basic principle is simple. When a drug dealer or an employer needed some work done, they would often consort with crack-heads, but there was one golden rule that had to be followed. You never gave the crackhead what they needed until the work was done, no matter how irate, how beggarly, or how imposing they might become, but especially in regards to the lofty promises of extra hard work and an all-time fabulous job that would be made to you! You had to stand your ground, because if you caved and gave them the money or the crack up front, your leverage was immediately nullified. Sometimes the crackhead would come back and do a half-assed patch job, but most of the time they wouldn’t come back at all, because giving a crackhead a fix and then expecting them to create results later is vintage fool’s gold. You hold onto that fix until the crack-rubber meets the junkie road, and you are satisfied with the results.
As the old saying goes, “Why buy the jobs creating cow, when you can get the Bush tax cut milk for free?” Maybe President Obama will put forth something along these lines in his new jobs plan, and dare the Republicans, the Tea Party, and the spineless Reagan-Democrats to vote against it. Since many of the Congressional members, especially a select few over in the House of Representatives, like to act like crackheads, maybe some “Crackhead Economics” is not out of the question.
With 2012 quickly approaching, the President needs to be defined more by his terms than by conservative terms. Conservative positions have monopolized the argument thus far; it’s time for Obama to turn the tables on the Republicans and their motley crew and call the bluff of their anti-liberal, anti-investment, anti-government poker face, because it’s not that bad to sit around and wait on economic prosperity to trickle down, as long as you’re not the one who’s down there waiting and depending on it. At some point in time, someone needs to force the so-called job creators to sh*t or get off of the jobs creating pot, and that cannot happen as long as there are those who would rather coddle them with capitalism instead of coaxing them with real, investment-oriented, tax cuts.
Remember, as much as the private sector may surreptitiously be against President Obama, the greedy lure of capitalism can make crackheads out of the best of them.
