He had a commanding lead in the GOP primary polls for the last 5 months of that campaign.

The national polls for the general were pretty close - most had Hillary up by about 2%.

Here is a poll that came out just a week or so ago from Suffolk. The most relevant section are the favorability ratings of various groups/people

Favorability ratings:

Trump - 45%
Clinton - 35%
Warren - 34%
GOP - 37%
Democrats - 36%
Congress - 26%
The Media - 37%

Yup. Trump tops em all. Tops the democratic party, the media, the GOP.
