“It’s a sentiment being echoed by conservative officials in red states across the country. The indefinite academic appointments that come with tenure have faced review from lawmakers or state oversight boards in at least half a dozen states”

“The trend reflects how conservative scrutiny of instruction related to race, gender and sexuality has extended from schools to higher education.”

“Attacks on higher education have been fueled by a shift in how conservatives see colleges and universities, said Jeremy Young, of the free-expression group PEN America. The share of Republicans and independent-leaning Republicans who said higher education was having a negative effect on the country”

“They’ve latched onto the idea that many totalitarian regimes have done over the years, which is if you can stop students from learning about ideas that a political party in power disagrees with, that is one way to stop those ideas from existing in the society at all,” said Andrew Gothard, president of United Faculty of Florida.”

Fits in perfectly with “I love the poorly educated”

Regardless of the political intent here, the attempt to control what is taught, or stymieing free thought, what conservatives fail grasp is that tenure is an earned job benefit, isn’t given easily, not all college faculty are tenured, and in fact the chance at tenure is a way schools attract top talent and raise the reputation of your institution

Destroy education

They have been working on that for decades

Remember every time America tried to increase public education funds they would scream the idiot line “throwing money at the problem”

They insisted schools never needed more funding

No matter how many MORE STUDENTS our nations states had to teach each year

Somehow schools can be fixed and maintained without money according to them

You just pile more children into each classroom and bus them all over hell when the need for a new school presented its self

You just pay teachers LESS if you need to hire more

They want public schools to fail

They want to privatize all of education

So that many children get no education

And that the ones who’s parents can afford it end up getting corporate propaganda

This party needs to die

Professors can already be fired for misconduct, sexual harassment, embezzlement, budget cuts. I knew a tenured professor who was dismissed for sexual harassment.

Tenure is intended primarily to protect freedom of intellectual inquiry.

True, and even if not dismissed, relegate them to what they would consider demeaning responsibilities, the last thing a recognized professor wants to teach is something like freshman survey classes

Why should they get a job for life anyway?
