Conservatives Sour on College

I agree with so much of this. While I encourage [some of] my kids to plan to go to college I provide the warning that they're going to hear/see/ instructors who are very liberal ... even hostile to the values many of these kids take to college with them.
Why don't they attend Christian colleges then?

I find it curious that Academia IS more left-leaning. What's the scoop on that one?

But it's silly to avoid college for that reason. There is no 'brainwashing' going on; prominent instances of left-wing views entering the classroom get a lot of publicity, but the vast majority of teaching is per the curriculum. Don't have your kids take political science if you're worried about it. Not a lot of engineering & business professors are out their preaching their political views.
I was going to say, Calculus teachers are not teaching about their political views.

I thought your point was that this supposed denial of speakers was an indication of Universities leaning left?

People rioting are dimwits regardless of thier political leanings, and I'd wager that a whole lot of those people have very little to do with the school

Riots and civil disobedience can indeed be effective.

Universities have always leaned left. That's not the issue. The issue has been this denial of conservative speakers, the rioting over them and the outright open hostility to views that don't match their own. Then you have places like Mizzou and that mess.

I don't really give a shit about right-wing bots and their children. Conservatives can raise them in a closet if they choose .. and often do.

The point is that conservatism is a failed philosophy that teaches self-centered hate and division. It can't die quick enough.

In fact, I'm good with conservatives keeping their kids out of college if they choose. Dumbing conservatism down only hastens its demise.

Look no further than Donald Trump.

It's not about being a conservative or a liberal. Universities are suppose to be places where students are challenged and made to think.

Clearly some, including yourself, would rather they be sheltered and turned into little bots.

And i know you're a socialist but it's not going to win.

Question: Do conservative colleges deny liberal speakers?

Show me an example.

BYU students' actions shameful

At the BYU forum featuring Helen Thomas, students got to hear about American politics and current events from a point of view little heard on campus. It was a chance for students to hear a political debate in a pure form rather than filtered through talk-show hosts or news reporters. Attendees were given the opportunity of listening to a woman who has had a front-row seat on nearly a half-century of American history.
But not all students welcomed the opportunity. Some derisively clapped at inappropriate moments in Thomas's talk. Some walked out, expressing disgust that she would even be allowed to speak on campus.

Not only did they slight themselves, they cast an ungenerous light on the university. Their actions helped reinforce the stereotype that BYU is an institution where academic and intellectual freedom is discouraged and only ultraconservative viewpoints are welcome.

Describe the type of student who should not attend Oral Roberts University and explain why.

People who should not attend Oral University:

If you are any other religion, do not attend. Catholics, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, etc, will have a very hard time there. They're not tolerant, and they will discriminate against you. Specially if you're Muslim. They have this thought of Islam= Terrorism, even professors.

If you have any liberal ideas. LGTB, Pro-choice, etc. Don't go, and if you do you won't be able to speak freely about it. And again, they will let you know you're not welcomed there.

If you're Homosexual, Transexual, or any other sexuality other than straight, DO NOT attend. You won't be accepted, you won't be treated as a human being if you do.

This is just something you have to take into consideration: ORU is kind of racist. They held a Trump rally and people there were very excited. Scary stuff. Most of them say Trump is the best option for America. Therefore, they agree with what he says. Half of what he says is racist. So there you go.

I was in ORU for a while, but left in less than a month because of these issues. Terrible school for anyone who wants to think outside the box and is not a 100%%%%% christian.

One knows ahead of time that BYU is a strict Mormon school and that Oral Roberts is a strict Christian school. Most of the Universities, including those at the top of the rankings, aren't.

Academia is currently in the process of moving from elitist and exclusive (something this conservative appreciates) to self-parody and irrelevant. They are becoming a lot more like the K-12 establishment which precedes them, whose once vaunted diploma is now viewed as merely an aesthetically pleasing piece of paper. Safe spaces are now synonymous with the college experience in every way conceivable, from their intellectual dishonesty to their cowardice and lack of maturity.

So it's OK to discriminate with speakers you allow if you're a Christian school .. but you can't do that if you're a liberal school?

It's about the expectations of a University. Discriminating is not ok. But one knows their are different rules at certain religious institutions

Then what's your point? Everyone knows there is discrimination at religious institutions doesn't make it any better than what liberal colleges do.

At Berkeley, one can expect that right-wing speakers will be met with protests.

At BYU, one can expect the rules to discriminate against liberal speakers.

What's the difference?

The difference is the largest majority of Universities in the country are not conservative Christian colleges. And speakers aren't getting met with protesters they are getting met with riots and the speakers aren't able to speak.

Yes, but you have to take a lot of garbage where some would try to indoctrinate. My Comp II and Speech teachers were as liberal as they come and made no bones about how they wanted to sway you that way too. And that was 1985.
