OK but you know that all the Greek playwrights, all the Roman ones, the King James Bible, Jane Austen, Maya Angelou, even fucking Shakespeare used "they" in the singular.
Comedy of Errors: "There's not a man I meet but doth salute me / As if I were their well-acquainted friend."
Much Ado About Nothing: "God send every one their heart's desire!"
Just curious, do you have a degree in English, Writing, or Journalism? No? Hmmm. So what makes you the authority on the English language? You're doing what Conservatives do when it comes to science...reducing things to their utmost base level by regressing back on your primary education.
That has never been the case. Not in any history of Western Literature. Never. From the days of Escalus through Oscar Wilde and into Stephen King, that was never a standard.
Not at all, and you can't point to anything that proves it is, whereas I can point to literature from virtually ANY ERA and pull out singular they's.
Please stop posturing. It's a terrible look.
Who made you the gatekeeper of the English language even though you have no degree in it and don't seem to read a lot of literature very often. What was the last book you read?
