Confederacy: check. Now on to colonialism

I think taking down any of these statues is stupid, but as usual, it's being exaggerated by the media. The reason that statue of Teddy Roosevelt is being taken down is because it portrays Imperialism in a positive way, not because Roosevelt himself is now seen as unworthy of being honored.
not "Imperialism" . such crap.
You could have used "Colonialism", and been correct, and then had a discussion on the merits/demerits of same

Let's see you discuss that with regard to ongoing Izraeli theft and illegal annexation- condoned by your leader, El Trumpo.

Or you can run and hide;

Hello Woko Haram,

I'm not talking about Confederate statues. We've already seen a Teddy Roosevelt statue taken down and several Founding Fathers statues defaced. The attacks on statues might have started with Confederate figures, but clearly, it doesn't stop there.

Anyone who owned slaves or has some connection to imperialism is up next. It doesn't matter what the figure achieved in life outside of these things.

That one particular Roosevelt statue was offensive. He is sitting high on a horse with a black man and a native American under him. I can see honoring great achievements but what did that statue say? We know who Teddy was. Who are the other two? Do they even have names? Why were they depicted that way?

Why don't you fucking cunts start attacking Americans face to face instead of statues? No balls?

Pretty much semantics there. Either way, one country shouldn't invade and exploit another country.
no it's not "Semantics" AT ALL.
you show a ridiculous low level of understanding of the benefits of Colonialization as well.

Look at India. the rail system and the legal system they use from British rule. Both serve them well.

+ you are layering on 21st century values of 17th century colonialism

Let's compare India to China. India has one of the best technical higher education systems in the world(Indian Institutes of Technology). It uses English common law, the English language, and English capitalism. All have been high successful. As late as 1990, India was much more successful than China.

So of course India is so much richer than China.... NOT!!! The reality is that all this failed miserably. The British rule did not mean that India did better than China.

That's the excuse they're going with, but I don't get the impression that's why so many activists were pushing for its removal. These are the same kind of people willing to deface statues of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

If that was really the rationale, why not only remove those figures? Again, the excuse given for the removal doesn't add up.

He made a good point actually, and there are actually many Indians that admire the British for what they brought to India.

I'm reminded of that Monty Python scene where the people complain about the Romans, and then someone mentions all of the advances they brought.

It depends on how you define success. China's middle class is artificial through government loans. Also, Indians might be poorer, but they also are freer. Indian citizens have far more rights than Chinese citizens.

So, success is defined by your priorities. Some people value wealth more than freedom, but others value freedom more than wealth.

It's also worth noting that the wealth of Chinese is centered in cities. A huge portion of China's population lives in rural areas, where the average person is significantly poorer than the average Indian.

Damn, you have gone so far as to defend colonialism now?? :palm:

When the Europeans went there it was one of the, if not the richest place on earth, when the brits left it was a fuckin mess of poverty.. Just a coincidence I guess.......

They didn't go exploring, they went exploiting...........

The Chinese Government gives almost nothing in consumer loans. It is an alien concept to them. Most government loans are to massive industries.

The average Chinese person is significantly richer than the average Indian. On paper Indians have more freedom, but poverty robs them of much of their freedom. India also has a huge amount of corruption. China has more corruption than we would be used to, but India is an entirely different league. That corruption infringes on freedom too.

Hello Woko Haram,

I believe all three were one piece, part of the statue.

The removal was an official action taken by an elected body. They do not require 'an excuse.'

I should rephrase. Many of the companies that lend in China are technically private, but a lot of them are essentially run by the government due to their close connections to high officials. There is a growing market for private lenders that actually are private to the extent that we would normally think of, but that's a relatively new thing.

Sure, the HDI reveals that Chinese are wealthier on average, but again, that doesn't reflect a huge minority of the population. 40% of their population is rural.

As far as corruption goes, the Corruption Perceptions Index puts them at dead even: https://www.transparency.org/en/cpi
