Confederacy: check. Now on to colonialism

There is a difference between what we celebrate & honor, and what we teach.

When we start editing the textbooks, or censoring historical texts and biographies, I'll be alarmed.

Hello Darth,

Have you been indoctrinated with the myth of the noble savage?
____________

The significance of warfare varied tremendously among the hundreds of pre‐Columbian Native American societies, and its meanings and implications changed dramatically for all of them after European contact. Among the more densely populated Eastern Woodland cultures, warfare often served as a means of coping with grief and depopulation. Such conflict, commonly known as a “mourning war,” usually began at the behest of women who had lost a son or husband and desired the group's male warriors to capture individuals from other groups who could replace those they had lost. Captives might help maintain a stable population or appease the grief of bereaved relatives: if the women of the tribe so demanded, captives would be ritually tortured, sometimes to death if the captive was deemed unfit for adoption into the tribe. Because the aim in warfare was to acquire captives, quick raids, as opposed to pitched battles, predominated. Warfare in Eastern Woodland cultures also allowed young males to acquire prestige or status through the demonstration of martial skill and courage. Conflicts among these groups thus stemmed as much from internal social reasons as from external relations with neighbors. Territory and commerce provided little impetus to fight.

_____________

It’s a myth. All primitive cultures had barbaric practices; fought amongst themselves in nasty ways; practiced torture; often times child sacrifice and etc.

Even the ones of color. If you were ‘taught’ otherwise—you were lied to.

Did you think you were going to learn anything about peaceful Native Americans in the "The Oxford Companion to American Military History?"

The Hopi tribe of the SW was completely peaceful and only fought out of defense when attacked.

It’s a politically incorrect source, granted lol.

But that’s kind of the point.

Hello Darth,

Are you proud of what we've done with Puerto Rico?

That place could be a shining jewel of the Caribbean. Instead it is a sweltering pit of poverty. Because we have raped it in true colonial fashion. Taken everything possible from her, left her with misery.

How did we do that, exactly?

How is a statue of T. Roosevelt a "symbol of colonialism and racism?" I'd like some details on that.

Basically, it depicts the ‘colonialist Roosevelt’ leading people of color into the civilized world.

Or, it’s racist to the core. Depending on how it’s interpreted.

It has been a lot longer than two weeks sport. This attack on American history and America has been going on for several years. They are almost finished wiping away all reminders of the Civil War so now it's time to start on colonialism. It won't be long till they demand the destruction of the Declaration of Independence as a reminder of the white mans stealing this country from the Indians, and Mexico.

Wait - "reminders"? So how exactly do the Confederate monuments "remind" us of the Civil War where books, movies, and tv shows do not?

If they don't remind you of the civil war and slavery why are you so hotsy trot to tear them down? First statues, next books and films "hell HBO has already pulled Gone with the Wind from its library. How do you spell censorship?

Hello Reverend_Hellh0und,

By retaining ultimate power to this day.

Puerto Rico has crippling federal regulation without voting representation.

You didn't explain yourself very well, so you are suggesting that peurto rico bears no responsibility for it's current state and it's all our fault?

What specific crippling fed regs are you talking about?

First statues, next books and films "hell HBO has already pulled Gone with the Wind from its library. How do you spell censorship?

You're a liar.

HBO didn't pull GWTW from HBO Max permanently, they took it down so they could provide a disclaimer and introduction to run ahead of the film before you watch it, to provide historical context. Isn't history important? That's what you all have been saying about these monuments.

Why is it that you lie like this? I don't understand this compulsion of yours. It makes no sense and it serves no purpose other than to divide people.

So you've really backed yourself into a corner here; you argue on the one hand that these monuments serve as "reminders", but then you don't even know what they are supposed to remind people of, so you're arguing that they serve history, but then go on to prove you have taken no history from them.

So since they don't serve an historical purpose, what purpose do they serve?

Also, HBO Max is a privately owned platform and they can do whatever the hell they want on it.

"Conservatives discovering the free market" is always an exercise I enjoy.

But still, we’ve moved onto colonialism.

Do any of the colonies want to revert back to their pre-colonial days? Are any of the ‘offended’ rushing to go back to the colonies their putative ancestors came from?

Help me to understand this.

You understand it.

I agree there is a slippery slope danger. The failsafe between a statue and a book is pretty clear, however. It's the difference between making an appointment and having authority rub your nose in it
A statue of Hitler in town square versus buying Mein Kampf to read. Must I stay indoors to avoid an offensive statue? I can easily avoid that book and still have a life.
