I can still remember black high school classmates joking with/teasing each other about going to the beach to tan.

Probably because facial features are more difficult to discern in a photo of a person with dark skin. Same reason why a woman with less than attractive body shape looks better in a black outfit rather than a light color- you don't see the subtle shadows.

I used to do the official photos our one of our high school sports teams, and one girl had very dark skin. On a team photo, outside in bright sunshine, you could barely tell who she was never mind her facial features. The only way to get a good picture of this girl's face was inside, with carefully planned lighting.

Hands down the most beautiful woman that I have personally know has skin the color of French roast coffee. We worked in a large office together and became friends. Outside in bright sunlight you just couldn't see how gorgeous she was, but once she was inside it was nearly impossible to take your eyes off her.
