Commander in Cheap

During Brown's first trip to America in the summer of 2007, he was given a fur-trimmed brown leather bomber jacket by President George W. Bush.

Let me first tell you what Gordon Brown's gift was. "Mr Brown's gifts," there were three, "included an ornamental desk pen holder made from the oak timbers of Victorian anti-slaver HMS Gannet, once named HMS President. Mr Obama was so delighted he has already put it in pride of place in the Oval Office on the Resolute Desk which was carved from timbers of Gannet's sister ship, HMS Resolute.

"Another treasure given to the US President was the framed commission for HMS Resolute, a vessel that came to symbolise Anglo-US peace when it was saved from ice packs by Americans and given to Queen Victoria. Finally, Mr Brown gave a first edition set of the seven-volume classic biography of Churchill by Sir Martin Gilbert." Now, this pen set, this pen set contains wood from the ship that Obama's desk in the Oval Office is made of. These are well-thought-out gifts given with tremendous respect. Do you know what Obama gave Gordon Brown? Twenty-five DVDs of classic American films. Not even Blu-ray, standard definition DVDs that Gordon Brown could have purchased on Amazon or Barnes & Noble or anywhere, if he had any desire to see them.

I guess in the great international language of diplomacy this may be offensive and coming from someone who claimed he wanted to reunite with our allies after we had previously offended them this is surprising but it still seems kind of petty to worry about.

It won't be soon forgotten by the Brit's. Petty was the "wag the Rush" media blitz in an attempt to get eyes off the trillion dollar spending spree.

Gordon went to America and all he got were some dodgy DVD's. We're outraged.

It's literally all we're talking about.
Yeah, I heard. It was headlined on some rag out there, wasn't it?

His gift to Obama rocked though.

I'm guessing the Daily Mail.

Everyone else seemed preoccupied with the announcement that we're going to start printing money. What could possibly go wrong? Wheelbarrows ahoy!

Since I haven't followed the story are you being facetious or did it actually make news out there?

I'll send Mr. Browns my "I went to America, and all I got was this lousy set of DVDs" t-shirt. He needs it more than I do and apparently I have more than one set of DVDs now.

The only thing i've seen is some little opinion piece in The Times, although i wouldn't be surprised if the Daily Mail made some fuss over it (they tend to get a little hysterical in the manner of a crazed menopausal Aunt).

Everyone i've talked to is more bothered about Gordon's sycophantic fawning over Obama and Congress. It really was sickening.

That's very kind of you Damo (see Gordon that is what we call a "special relationship"). However, i reckon you'll have as much chance of seeing Gordon pictured in a T-Shirt as you have of him wearing George Bush's aviator jacket.

Diplomats can be pretty damned shallow. Dignitaries used to get offended by Thomas Jefferson dressing up like a bum when he received them at the White House... It doesn't surprise me that he would have been so without class, but its also trivial and unimportant.
