Columbus Day? Really?

With all the actual heroes in our past, is Columbus really worthy of a federal holiday?

If there is anyone who believes he actually discovered America, you might want to open a book occasionally.

Why not find a new way to give federal employees and schools the day off?

It was a holiday pushed for the Italians/Catholics, just like MLK day for the blacks, and Cesar Chavez day in California for the Mexicans.

You can blame a democrat for it.

In the United States, Columbus day commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492.

The day became a federal holiday until 1937 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared it so after a campaign by the Catholic Knights of Columbus.

Looking at the past few wins for LSU they have about as much for the future in this season as OU. That's why I haven't talked much smack for my team. I honestly couldn't see anyone beating Alabama they way they played the first few games.

As to Colombus...well, I think he was a nut for some of the risks he took but was instrumental in starting up or expanding the exploration that took place during his time. I don't mind giving him a day....but our schools don't take the day off. And the Dr's office was open as I went in this morning for a stress test.

Absolutely. Did his discovery of the New World herald an era of unfathomable carnage and genocide? Yes. Was he a poor public administrator? Yes. Was he a lousy business man? Yes. Was he one of the greatest Mariners, Admirals and explorers in human history? Absolutely he was.

There's a lot of bullshit mythology about Columbus just as their is about Lincoln and Washington and, as with those two, there's also a lot of revisionist history about Columbus but as with Lincoln and Washington the real man is even more fascinating and is with out a doubt deserving of the accolades history has heaped upon him.
