Columbia University to No Longer Require SAT/ACT for Undergrad Admissions

What should be used in its place that's a better indicator? Top schools get tens of thousands of applicants for a couple of thousand openings. Some form of metrics must be used to differentiate them.

Do you see all the racism on this thread? All from republican Trumppers!

I don’t know, I just know some very smart and successful people who did not do well on the SAT, and I know some people who scored very well and are fuck ups. I guess it depends on what you’re looking for, but if you’re looking for people who test well, and can regurgitate information the SAT is a good idea.

Doing a good job of making college acceptance decisions would be more expensive but might make for a much more successful school and group of alumni.

I passed the bar exam my first try, but I spent much more time studying test taking strategies than the law.

Standardize tests like the SAT/ACT do a couple of things 1) help identify disadvantaged students who excel and 2) are supposedly a good metric of how well a student will do in school as putting a kid in a situation where he is likely to fail does the kid no favors

Standardize tests aren't perfect though and there are exceptions; those who don't do well on them but later become very successful and those who do well on the tests and screw off in school. But that's the exception, not the norm.

But you have to have criteria beyond grades. They were these tests. Now what will they be?

If you're going to troll we can discuss this. You know what's funny/sad? Many of you actually think what TDAK openly says. You'll never admit that of course but under the guise of equity you want to remove testing, standards and even in some instances grades because we have unequal outcomes. You don't think black people can measure up so you want to change the focus of how we educate.

It's not racism that bothers you Jarod, you just claim not to like it when its done by people who don't vote the way you want them too.

Wow, you are defending the most hate filled racist on the forum. I see why you like to ban me.

False, and you don’t acknowledge the racist problem the Republican Party has… look at Charlottesville, lots of the racists were Trumppers.

You don’t see the Proud Boys supporting Biden.

Holy sh*t. Can anything in the world not revolve around Trump or Biden? You are Exhibit A of what Malcolm X was speaking about. Nothing matters except political power thus avoiding actual discussion on topics like this or other racist remarks and go back to voting.

I'm open though. Explain to me why my statement is false and why these academic changes being made in the name of equity aren't lowering standards and supporting what TDAK claims. (Because let's be clear, the removal of the SAT/ACT is being driven by equity aka racial reasons).

I did not realize your racism was the motive for talking about Columbia. I understand now why you usually ban me from your racist threads.

I do not know why the institution are changing what they look at for admissions. I do know that standardized tests are not a good predictor of success in college. I doubt it has to do with race.

In part it was caused by the Covid crisis. People just could not go to a public room and take the test.

COVID is no longer a Crisis. Plus healthy 18 -20 year olds RARELY had a problem with COVID . Unhealthy ones could make other arrangements to take the test.. I couldn't take the SAT on a Saturday and got it rescheduled for me on a Sunday. So try again for another lame excuse.

OH REALLY?

SAT scores are strongly predictive of college performance—students with higher SAT scores are more likely to have higher grades in college. SAT scores are predictive of student retention to their second year—students with higher SAT scores are more likely to return for their second year.

Wow. The bubble you live in Jarod. Standardized tests like the SAT/ACT have been used by colleges because research has shown they are a good indicator of how a student will perform when they arrive on campus. The argument against them in some corners is they are culturally biased/racist tests (and kids from well to do families have an advantage when taking them although the counter argument to that is they identify those who excel who come from disadvantaged backgrounds). Universities have been trying to increase black specifically but black and Hispanic enrollment at their schools. The argument is removing these tests will help them achieve that.

So this is very much driven by race.

For those ignorant of the SAT, contrary to the racists on the thread, it has nothing to do with your fear of Blacks getting into Columbia.

Wish I could say I am surprised by this ignorance.
