Cold Dead Hand

I did some research on the NRA and it seemed to be an organization I could support at one time. Wasn't it the speech about jack-booted government thugs the turning point for them?

The turning point was when they decided they cared more about money and power than educating gun users.

My right to live trumps your gun rights.

sorry, but one right does not trump another right

your right to live is a matter of law as is the right to own a firearm

it is the misuse of a firearm that is not supported by law

my solution is requiring a background check for the purchase of firearms, ammunition and clips

also, make straw purchasing a felony

And that's sensible, I don't see why gun rights people are so opposed.

Because universal checks that are being proposed would only work with universal registration, and as has been show many many many many many times there is no sound argument FOR registration but there are plenty of arguments against it. Also, it is an infringement on property rights because you are effectively denying the right of a lawful person with lawful property to sell it lawfully to another lawful person.

Now if you wanted a universal check that would actually work, you have two options:
1: Let non-FFLs have access to the NICS system. If I can call into it when I make a private sale, then what's the problem? And If I was the type that wouldn't make the call, what makes you think the system you have proposed will stop me?
2: Have a check performed when you get a state ID/Drivers license. If you are adjudicated or convicted of an offense that would prohibit you, you get a NO GUNS stamp or something.

Either of those options would be met with little/no opposition.
