secondly "illegal payments" MAY be campaign finance violations -not clear on that

The problem here is that Cohen has changed his story (lied). For the payments to be illegal the money had to be paid from a business...which Cohen indeed just happened to set one up for himself. With his admitted lying, it will hard to figure out just what version of the "truth" to believe from him.
as far as Cohen is concerned he'll pick the truth that will support his political narrative.

Cooperating with law enforcement is what lands a lot of people behind bars. People are far better off to invoke their 5th amendment rights early and often.

Cohen would turn evidence on his own mother if he had it. So it’s safe to surmise he just didn’t have what Mullet is after.
Invoking your 5th often doesn’t save you. It just protects you for incriminating yourself, often there is others or evidence that will do that for you. If your cooperate in these instances, it can often save you from a longer time incarerated.

His sentencing guidelines are 0-6 months, so cooperating 1) screwed him and 2) didn't save him much time if any. Federal judges are fairly adherent to the sentencing guidelines.

Mueller wrote that Cohen revealed more information about “contacts between [the Trump org] and Russian interests during the course of the campaign” during his meetings with prosecutors in September 2018.
The special counsel added that Cohen “explained financial aspects of the deal that would have made it highly lucrative for [the Trump org] and himself,” and that the former Trump attorney’s information about the Trump Tower Moscow project was “corroborated by other information obtained in the course of the SCO’s investigation.”

SDNY has a different target .. Cohen. They could have charged his wife. So if Cohen gets 5 years .. he wins. He could have 18 years with his wife in jail as well.
