If you are too stupid to see that there are OBVIOUS differences to Afghanistan vs. the Soviets and what is occurring there today, then you are an idiot.

We trained and supplied the Afghans to fight the Soviets who were trying to take over their country.

Today, the Afghan people do not want a return of the taliban to power. While they do want us gone, they do not want us to leave them at the mercy of the Taliban.

If Obama is to learn from past mistakes he should remember these two...

1) We bailed on the Afghan people after the Soviet withdrawal. We should have stayed and helped them rebuild their economy. Instead we pulled out and left them at the mercy of the extremists that eventually took over.

2) After the first Gulf War, we should have finished the job there as well. We had the support of the Kurds in the north and to a lesser degree the Shiite in the South. We could have aided them in removing a tyrant at that point, but chose instead to abandon them and starve them to death via the UN.... and we wondered why they didnt greet us with open arms.
