Citing First Amendment, federal judge blocks Trump order to end funding for NPR and PBS

Citing the First Amendment, a federal judge on Tuesday agreed to permanently block the Trump administration from implementing a presidential directive to end federal funding for National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service, two media entities that the White House has said are counterproductive to American priorities.

The operational impact of U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss' decision was not immediately clear — both because it will likely be appealed and because too much damage to the public-broadcasting system has already been done, both by the president and Congress.

Moss ruled that President Donald Trump’s executive order to cease funding for NPR and PBS is unlawful and unenforceable. The judge said the First Amendment right to free speech “does not tolerate viewpoint discrimination and retaliation of this type.”

That's the thing about these EOs.

Even if they don't stand the damage is already done in most cases.

They need to be stayed immediately instead of left to run while they work through the system.

The biggest thing that PBS does, is offer programming without the influence of or interference from corporate interests.

No commercials means no income derived from the producers of products who have the power to affect, direct, steer, color or otherwise influence the content of the programming that they broadcast.

Which is why it's important for them to maintain a presence on TV.
Yea, right, sure...

Ever notice that NOVA, the science show, was heavily funded by the Koch brothers? Corporations donated heavily to put on various shows they deemed they wanted shown. Between shows, these corporations got advertising in the form of their names being displayed and a statement that they were funding the show.

As an aside, one of the furnaces I built for a now defunct company called Materials and Electro-Chemical Research Corporation (MER Corp) actually got shown on a NOVA episode about the discovery of carbon 60, aka "Bucky balls."

Almost all of them end up standing. They are initially being struck down by the same handful of judges, mostly in the DC and Boston district courts, which tells you something about the politics of our federal court system. These same activist judges have seen their power to make nationwide injunctions stripped from them almost entirely. If they keep putting politics ahead of the law, it's likely they'll see more of their power to make rulings stripped as well.

Bullshit ruling. No basis in law. But that never stopped activist marxist judges who think they are kings

Hardly the same thing.

But since you made the claim that PBS programming is influenced by these corporate sponsors like the Koch brothers, (something I'd think you'd be happy about) now how about providing some examples of that corporate influence?

Show us exactly how the Koch brothers influenced the information presented in a NOVA science episode.

BTW... the very fact that PBS is even airing science shows about astronomy, astrophysics, geology, archeology, anthropology, etc, etc, etc... is in and of itself a solid reason why the network should be protected and funding continued.

Which other network airs that kind of quality educational programming that benefits everyone regardless of political affiliation?

And then there's the children's educational programming that's on 7 days per week...

Your arguments against funding PBS are shallow and thin.

Along with their pawns.

Says the watcher of commercial network violence, explosions, gun-shooting, car chasing, tits & ass flaunting mindless slop who doesn't watch educational TV like PBS because he thinks that kind of "int-uh-leck-shul shit" is too dang lib'rul.
I don't watch TV, Sybil. There is really no point.
Besides, the PBS Network and individual stations don't get public tax dollars.
Lie. Denial.
What they're talking about getting their funding cut, is the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which is the chief fundraiser for the PBS Network.
Lie. Paradox.

PBS even encourages it

So trump cuts funding for the corporation that handles fundraising and distribution, then he hires a hatchet man to come in and investigate them for possibly stepping a toe or two over the line between allowable mention of corporate funding and what they're conveniently calling "commercials"?

Not buying it.
OK so the CPB has had some issues, but nothing that could not be sorted out and corrected.

The Republicans have always hated PBS because just like public schools which they also hate, PBS operates on public funding and Republicans are obsessed with money except for when Republicans waste the shit out of it like trump is doing now.(pardoning convicted fraudsters and forgiving over a billion dollars in restitution, creating DOGE which cost more to run than it saved, etc, etc)

Their reasons for cutting funding are exaggerated and little more than convenient excuses to do what they've always wanted to do anyway, while ignoring all the many more positive aspects of PBS than there are negatives.

Well yeah.... trump cut their funding so what're they supposed to do.... have people with kettles ringing bells on street corners?

PBS has traditionally been the provider of the highest quality programming on TV.

I'm still waiting for the FOX Science, Arts and Education Network.

🙄

PBS being government funded on the basis of a need for free speech is indefensible. How is playing reruns of the Lawrence Welk Show, a need for free speech?

Trump is a retard. He is not opposed to using tax dollars to fund this - so long as it is favorable to him. Stop defending his stupidity.

"if their tax dollars fund public broadcasting at all, they fund only fair, accurate, unbiased, and nonpartisan news coverage"

So again - he spelled out why he is was going to lose in his own stupid fucking words. he is a moron. "Fair and accurate" - he might as well said you report, he decides.

I started with the fact that their programming resulted in a huge number of jobs and copy programs. These programs create a huge financial benefit for America. They create thousands of jobs and taxpayers. If your world view is that narrow, you should still understand it is a benefit to America in every way.
“PBS creates jobs” is not the slam dunk you think it is. Taxpayer-funded spending can always be said to create jobs. That is true of bridges, murals, pamphlets, wars, or a warehouse full of beanbags.

The question is not whether money spent creates activity. Of course it does. The question is whether this use of taxpayer money is better than letting people keep it and support what they value voluntarily.

And no, a subsidized entity does not magically lighten the tax burden because some of the people on its payroll also pay taxes. That argument is economic nonsense.

YOu do realize that PBS and NPR recieved pretty minimal funding, right?

They are still operating.

Do you know why they were created?

Do you understand why cutting their funding undermines that reason?
