Chuck Todd: ‘I Don’t Understand How Bernie’s Considered a Frontrunner’

Hello Casual Leftist,

Many Bernie fans are young idealists. They are not well informed and do not grasp the big picture nor the veracity of compromise.
There will be no compromise with Socialism, no Socialism light. No incrementalism, Capitalism and free markets form our economic unit.

If you prefer Socialism, emigrate to Venezuela...bring food...and batteries.

There's a lot that can be said about the perspective you're presenting, but I'll be brief. To say they are not well informed is a baseless assertion, as well as implying only young people support him. To simply write them off as idealists when 88% of Bernie supporters voted for Hillary shows that the Bernie or bust crowd, just like the idea of Bernie Bros, is a myth. https://www.salon.com/2020/02/09/th...ndits-dont-understand-how-the-internet-works/

But compromise, that is what I want to talk about. Compromise loses its veracity when the cost for compromise is principles - to even say there has been compromise implies that there are 2 equal sides negotiating in good faith. It's not a simple divide of Democrats vs Republicans, both parties represent business interests over the working class, there is no good faith left in Washington. For over 50 years there have been compromises and out right capitulation towards the business and industrial class at the expense of the working class. Bernie has been there the whole time telling the nation how foolish it has been and his predictions have been correct. Now look where we are - where we are now it the culmination of compromise. What did Obama get for compromising with McConnell? Lost judge appointments, his healthcare legacy under constant threat, and even now the GOP will claim Obama didn't do enough to warn the public of Russian interference despite the fact McConnell refused to endorse the public statement saying it would be a partisan attack. We're done compromising with bad faith actors.

A recent Gallup poll says 53% of the country would not vote for a socialist.

They won't vote for a candidate running as a socialist. Majority of the country probably don't know what socialism is other than the antiquated generalities, but they will listen to Bernie when he talks, and what he says makes sense to a lot of people. How many people are really going to believe Bernie wants to the US into Venezeula

There will be no compromise with Trump, no Trump light. No incrementalism, social democracy and market regulation do form our economic unit.

"no compromise with socialism," hate to bust your bubble there "earl," but the US has been partially socialist since the 19th Century, outside of the obvious, your SS and Medicare, didn't you ever look around and wonder why we don't have private fire departments, twelve year old kids working in factories, or privately owned toll bridges to mention a few?

Why can't we be satisfied with the fact Americans like the flavor of New Deal Populism but aren't sure about the branding of 'socialist'. Let's rebrand the movement 'Reinvesting in America' - investment, that's a word capitalists understand. Ask them if they think FDR was a socialist and watch their circuits spin.

We pay for SS and Medicare...hate to burst your bubble there, anchovies.

No, let’s call Socialism what it is, bloody Socialism, that has caused death and starvation the world over. See Venezuela.

You have no clue why there aren't private fire departments. It has nothing to do with socialism and far more to do with people being personally irresponsible.

And those that contribute at a higher income level do not get as much of a proportional return as those contributing at a low level income. Someone contributing at a 4x higher rate does not get 4x as much of a distribution as the lower income contributor.

Plans have been proposed to allow people to opt out of SS. Lefties like archives oppose it. No one wonders why.

most americans agree with the mixed model.

you need to stop the free healthcare for illegals thing though. thats a bridge too far on all fronts. your supply lines are thin, the center cannot hold.

Responsible people that provide for themselves aren't satisfied with irresponsible people that think someone else should do it for them.

The term "investment" was used when the "free college" plans are proposed. When a kid's parents don't think their own child is worth the "investment" when it comes to college, you can't convince me that I should consider THEIR kid a good investment.

Perhaps I am posting to one.

I agree with you that the old Socialist is a Socialist.

I can play that game too, Jimmy.

Not very well, though. We live in a social democracy economic model and have for a century. Earl, that is not going to change.

No, our government is a Federal Constitutional Republic (per the CIA World Fact-book and eighth grade Civics teachers all across America) and our economic unit is Capitalism.

That will not change even though the old Socialist, Bernie wants to destroy Capitalism.

It won’t happen.

People so irresponsible they refuse to do for themselves listen to Bernie.

Venezuela didn't want to turn itself into what it is. It wasn't a matter of what they wanted but of the past they chose to take. Bernie obviously didn't learn.

And I do too. You won't see me advocating for State run pizza shops. But the problem is regulatory capture and other lobbyist efforts means the metaphorical referee of the marketplace has been corrupted. Americans didn't agree to that.

You're not the first guy on this website with that point, and I'll ask you what I asked the other ass-hat: Prove it.

Really, prove how much public spending, in this case healthcare, i actually going to illegals. Give me a ball park estimate.
