There seems to be a dispute on which Defense officials to believe. Not sure what the Pentagon said.

My guess is that there have been previous balloons but only on the edges.

The senior defense official who briefed reporters this weekend admitted that the balloons during the Trump administration did not fly over the U.S. for as long as the one that was shot down this week.

Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.), a top GOP member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said on CNN on Sunday that the U.S. has seen these balloons in the past.
 
MY guess is that if this happened then it was slight cross into US territory and then out again. Nothing like this where they are flying over the continental US. Where people could actually stand in Montana and other places and look up in the sky and see it. Of course the Left does not care about such distinctions. They only care about deflecting blame in any way they can.

Where were all the civilian sightings during the Trump years?

I don't recall there being any cellphone videos of balloons floating across the skies until now.

But senior Pentagon officials said in an on-background press conference on Saturday that suspected Chinese surveillance balloons crossed into the US at least three times during the Trump administration and once earlier in the Biden administration.

If it actually happened during the Trump administration the military should supply actual video of the event. And there should be civilian videos of the event. They have none.
