China has given up on the West

The inward turn is also squeezing out foreigners — though not all of them, of course. The Party is happy to host certain skilled individuals, such as English language teachers and pet bloggers, who amplify its messages about how the Tibetan and Uyghur peoples have benefitted from Socialism with Chinese Characteristics. Equally, the few hundred thousand Southeast Asians toiling on its production lines are welcome to stay. But at the levels of business management and control, something significant is happening.

Ker Gibbs, who was President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai from 2019 to 2021, has watched the growing de-foreignerisation of foreign-owned firms in China. To some extent, this reflects the development of a new generation of skilled Chinese managers able to manage complex supply chains. But he also notes that the constant pressure piled on Americans and other foreigners is causing an exodus. “It’s just not fun anymore” he tells me. “The space to operate freely has become more and more narrow.” Gibbs notes the growing authoritarianism of Xi’s China over the past decade was already pushing foreign businesspeople to leave, even before the pandemic. The draconian Covid lockdowns, particularly in Shanghai, were the last straw for many. In a few years’ time, American firms in China may no longer be run by Americans.

The same exodus can be seen in Hong Kong, once the “Gate to China” but increasingly just another Chinese city. Xi’s crackdown on free speech, the Party’s assault on the rule of law, Covid restrictions and the slow but constant “mainlandisation” of the territory are steadily diminishing its attractiveness. Hong Kong is still an “air lock” through which China can access foreign capital, but foreigners are leaving, which is exactly what the Party wants.

The Nature of the Beast
Too many Western politicians continue to delude themselves about the character of Beijing’s regime.

Hammond’s speech illustrates a persistent blind spot in the British and wider Western political establishment. Many people simply can’t reset: they were very comfortable with the old arrangement, the warm and cosy relationship with Beijing that was bookended by China’s 2001 entry into the World Trade Organisation and Trump’s 2018 trade war. Everyone made money, it worked nicely. Now the dream is over, and these people must adjust to a strange new age of spy balloons, concentration camps, vaccine nationalism, and looming war. They can’t manage it. They would rather believe in the China they were once presented with; the China that wined and dined them during the so-called golden age.

For those with eyes to see, that China was always a façade. Today it is much easier for everyone to recognise reality but Hammond and others continue to close their eyes and ears. They would never call for “business as usual” with Vladimir Putin, but Taiwan is in real danger of becoming the next Ukraine. These people overlook the similarities between the two regimes, such as the fact that Chinese executives go missing with the same regularity that Russian oligarchs are found to have suddenly tumbled out of windows or dropped dead along with their entire families.

This is correct:

Putin and China just scored a KNOCK OUT blow to the U.S. economy and we’re screwed

Every advanced military makes plans for all alternatives. We have spent many , many times as much on the military as the next 10 nations. China does not want to get into that.

I believe that the Chinese are far too smart to believe that they can replace their American customers with Africans and South Americans.
We brought them into the first world, and they know it.

We spend so much more because we pay our troops vastly more than other nations do both in salary and in benefits. When you tack on the massively higher costs associated with meeting government regulations to do virtually anything--something the DoD has to meet too, it also costs the US military several times what it costs most other nations for equipment, operations, and maintenance. This all adds up to vastly more spending for not that much return on the dollar spent.

Precisely. They're stuck with us. They need us to keep buying their stuff.

Two things that are killing China - they artificially inflate their GDP by building communities with no tenants. They're more vulnerable to Covid because they're too proud to use any of our Pharma, so they developed their own vaccine. One big problem with their vaccine - it doesn't work. They had to have lockdown after lockdown after we stopped having them which really hurt their economy.

They want to invade Taiwan like Russia invaded Ukraine which is why they're saber-rattling about selling weapons to Russia.

They're really not that much of an economic superpower.

News flash...our "vaccine" doesn't work.

I don't believe that to be true. Our pandemic was over before theirs was - and it originated in China so logically, it should have been long gone there. They were having lockdowns as late as October of last year. And their lockdowns were much more draconian than ours. They quarantined their people in group homes/prisons as I recall.

It didn't originate in China and people died from taking the shots.

How fucking dumb are you?

Our military is doing this to us. Are you ready to man up?

Believe what you want. I'm not dumb, I'm logical. You're claiming the virus came from a Chinese lab. How would the Chinese let any American near their lab?
