Predators of the spotted lanternfly include praying mantises, chickens, garden spiders, gray catbirds, yellowjackets, wheel bugs, garter snakes, and koi fish.

Also the little Spotted Orb Weaver Spider feasts on the Lanternfly!

Ironically, the praying mantis is a non native species introduced over a century ago from Europe. It is well established in the NE and ... did NOT stop the invasion.

I heard about that a while ago. I wasn't able to find any evidence to support that theory ... besides him owning a couple 100,000 thousand acres out of 900 million U.S. acres. He owns such a tiny percentage.

As far as I know it has not reached the west coast yet. I don't think anyone has seen them anywhere in the midwest either.

So...what is the big problem with these bugs? They look fat and juicy to any bird or praying mantis. I imagine they are just another source of food to them.

It's only been here for 8 years and it's spreading fast. Our natural predators are unable to control it. It has reached Indiana and Michigan.

Man is not going to rid the infestation problem alone. I am confident that the praying mantis is man's best help and best chance at resolving the problems.

The thing is, it's going to be expensive and the US FORREST SERVICE can help by propagating mass quantities of Praying Mantis, and we need Federal funds to insure they are applied out to the environment effectively.

Let's not let politics get in the way of Funding such projects and actually legislate a way to speed up the efforts to get the problem managed and under control.

I am sure every state would get some federal funds to step up the population and application of the Praying Mantis nationwide.

Write your congressmen/women and let's get er' done!

Praying Mantis are supercool. But Mantids are cannibals, making it difficult to seed the population. They are ambush predators, not active hunters. They just don't help that much. Even for quick massive increases, in the short term, there is little effect because of the cannibal problem.

Even if you are able to disperse them safely, Mother Nature will quickly drive them into the natural balance. Which is prey far outnumbering predators.

You're selling a pipedream. Like your everyone should just buy expensive organic, white lib food.
