Child told Paterno of sex abuse in 1976, court papers allege

I'm not a bit surprised that this would have been covered up for years rather than taint the brand. And before the arguing and name-calling starts, let me remind everyone that Haster's pedophilia was also covered up for years because of his power and influence. And worst of all IMO the Catholic church with its protection of pedo priests

"A new bombshell dropped in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal Thursday.

It came in the form of a single line in a court order on a related insurance coverage case involving Penn State, and its full ramifications can't immediately be gauged. But that line was eye-popping in itself.

The line in question states that one of Penn State's insurers has claimed "in 1976, a child allegedly reported to PSU's Head Coach Joseph Paterno that he (the child) was sexually molested by Sandusky."

The order also cites separate references in 1987 and 1988 in which unnamed assistant coaches witnessed inappropriate contact between Sandusky and unidentified children, and a 1988 case that was supposedly referred to Penn State's athletic director at the time.

All, the opinion states, are described in victims' depositions taken as part of the still-pending insurance case, but that, according a PennLive review of the case file, are apparently under seal.

"There is no evidence that reports of these incidents ever went further up the chain of command at PSU," Judge Gary Glazer wrote, in determining that because Penn State's executive officers - its president and trustees - weren't aware of the allegations, he would not bar claims from that time frame from insurance coverage.

If this is true, it's just incomprehensible. Think of all of the abuse that could have been prevented if it was reported then, or in the '80's when the assistant coaches allegedly knew something.

I just don't get it. To protect a football program?

It's not a connection. It's about how accusations of pedophilia had been covered up for decades rather than put the school in a bad light.

I'll amend my post to criticize the Catholic church also.

You can include Afrika Bambatta (he of the Zulu Nation and original rap pioneer). He's been accused of molesting numerous underage boys back in the day and was reading just yesterday about the number of black boys who get molested and it gets covered up. A black woman friend of mine posted the article on Facebook claiming it has to stop and the black community needs to bring this into the open to deal with it. I can't speak to that one way or the other but clearly it's out there.

I never heard of him but agree with you.

Football is sacred.
